CC_STAAD PRO
STAAD Pro is a structural analysis and design software widely used in civil engineering. It allows
engineers to analysis and design various structures such as buildings, bridges, towers, and industrial
plants. With its advanced features, STAAD Pro enables efficient modelling, simulation, and
optimization, ensuring safe and cost-effective structural designs. The full form of STAAD Pro is
"Structural Analysis and Design Professional." Staad pro commonly used in construction works.
Various types of loads are commonly applied to structures in engineering analysis and design. These
loads are essential to consider because they affect the structural behavior and performance. Here are
some common types of loads:
1. Dead Load: Also known as permanent or static load, dead load refers to the weight of the
structure itself along with any permanent fixtures, equipment, or materials attached to it.
Examples include the weight of walls, floors, beams, and roofing materials.
2. Live Load: Also called imposed or variable load, live load refers to temporary or movable
loads that act on the structure. These loads vary in magnitude and location over time.
Examples include furniture, people, vehicles, and equipment.
3. Wind Load: Wind load is the force exerted by wind on the structure. It depends on factors
like wind speed, direction, duration, and the shape and height of the structure. Wind loads can
cause lateral and uplift forces, affecting the stability of the structure.
4. Seismic Load: Seismic load, or earthquake load, is the force generated by earthquakes and
seismic events. It considers factors such as seismic activity in the region, soil conditions, and
the structure's response to ground motion. Seismic loads can cause horizontal and vertical
accelerations, leading to structural deformation and damage.
In STAAD.Pro, analysis and design are two distinct stages in the process of creating a
structural model:
1. Analysis:
Analysis involves evaluating the behavior of the structure under various loads and
conditions.
STAAD.Pro performs structural analysis to determine the internal forces, stresses,
displacements, and other responses of the structure.
This stage helps engineers understand how the structure will behave and ensure it
meets performance and safety requirements.
2. Design:
Design involves selecting appropriate structural elements (such as beams, columns,
and connections) and sizing them to meet design code requirements.
STAAD.Pro uses analysis results to perform structural design calculations based on
industry-standard codes and specifications.
This stage ensures that the structural members are adequately sized and configured to
safely support the applied loads and meet design criteria.
Here are some of the key structural elements used in STAAD models:
1. Nodes: Nodes are points in space where structural elements intersect or connect. They
represent the endpoints of beams, columns, and other structural members. Nodes are defined
by their coordinates in three-dimensional space (x, y, z).
2. Beams (Members): Beams, also known as members or elements, represent linear structural
elements such as columns, beams, braces, and trusses. They connect nodes and carry loads
between them. Beams are defined by their connectivity (connecting nodes) and properties
such as cross-sectional area, material properties, and length.
3. Plates: Plates are two-dimensional structural elements used to model slabs, walls, and other
planar elements in the structure. They are defined by a series of nodes arranged in a grid or
along their boundaries. Plates have properties such as thickness, material properties, and
boundary conditions.
4. Supports: Supports represent fixed or restrained connections that resist the movement of the
structure at specific locations. Common types of supports include fixed supports (fully
restrained), pinned supports (allow rotation but not translation), roller supports (allow
translation but not rotation), and springs (linear or nonlinear restraints).
