RATIONAL

FUNCTIONS
Objectives
I. Finding the Domain and Range.
II. Finding Zeroes, x and y Intercepts.
III. Finding the Vertical and Horizontal
Asymptotes.
1. Finding the Domain and Range of Rational Function

1. DOMAIN
a. First, equate the denominator to zero,

b. Then, create a notation for Domain that is,

In conclusion, all values can take the variable x except 0.

1. RANGE

a. First, we replace that is,

b. Solve x in terms of y.
1. RANGE
c. Equate the denominator to zero and solve for the value of y,

d. Create a notation for the Range,

In conclusion, all values can take the variable y except 2.

II. Finding the Zeroes, x and y Intercepts of the Rational Functions

II. Zeroes
a. First, equate the
b. Then, solve for the value of x,
In conclusion, the
acquired value of x
will be the zeroes of
function.
II. x - intercept

a. First, equate the

b. Then, solve for the value of x,

In conclusion, the acquired value of x

will be the x-intercept.
II. y- Intercept

a. First, replace all the variable x with zeroes,

In some cases, the denominator will be 0.

Therefore, there’s “no y-intercept” in this given.
II. y- Intercept

a. First, replace all the variable x with zeroes,

In this case, when x = 0, the y-intercept will be ,

III. Finding the Horizontal and Vertical Asymptotes

Is a line such that the distance between the curve and

Asymptotes the line approaches zero as one or both of the x or y.

The horizontal line y = b is a horizontal asymptote of the

Horizontal function if the value of the function gets to b as x increases
Asymptote without bound (x approaches +a or x approaches -a).

The vertical line x = a is a vertical asymptote of a function if

Vertical the graph of the function either increases or decreases
Asymptote without bound as the x-values approach from the right or left.
III. Finding the Horizontal and Vertical Asymptotes
Vertical
Asymptote

a. Equate the denominator to zero and solve for the value/s of x.

*notice the denominator is a quadratic, there are 2 possible values of x :
III. Finding the Horizontal and Vertical Asymptotes
Horizontal
Asymptote

3 CASES OF HORIZONTAL ASYMPTOTES

a. If the degree of the leading coefficient is less than that of the denominator, Horizontal
asymptote is zero or
b. If the degree is equal, then the horizontal asymptote is the quotient of their leading coefficients.

c. If the degree of the numerator is greater than that of the denominator, then the Rational Function
has “NO HORIZONTAL ASYMPTOTES”.
III. Finding the Horizontal and Vertical Asymptotes
Horizontal
Asymptote

b. If the degrees of the leading coeffiecients is equal, then the horizontal asymptote is the quotient
of their leading coefficients.
