Resistor Color Code Measurement

Figure: Resistor

❖ Different Types of Resistors: 1. 3 Band 2. 4 Band 3. 5 Band 4. 6 Band

➢ 3 Band & 6 Band resistors are relatively less used, 4 Band is most commonly used.

➢ Silver = ± 10%
➢ No-Color = ± 20%

Let’s start the calculation:

3 Band Resistor

Here,
1st Band (Red) = 2
2nd Band (Black) = 0
3rd Band (Red)/Multiplier = 2
As there is no 4th Band, therefore we can assume the color is No-
Color band. So,
4th Band (No-Color)/ Tolerance = ± 20%
According to the formula = 1st band 2nd band * 10^3rd/Multiplier
= 20 * 10^2
= 2000 Ohm ± 20%
20
Here, 2000 * 100 = 400 = 2000 Ohm ± 400
➢ (+ve) = 2000 Ohm + 400 = 2400 Ohm
➢ (- ve) = 2000 Ohm – 400 = 1600 Ohm
So, the value of the resistor maybe between 1600 Ohm to 2400
Ohm (1600 Ohm ⁓ 2400 Ohm).

4 Band Resistor

Here,
1st Band (Brown) = 1
2nd Band (Black) = 0
3rd Band (Red)/Multiplier = 2
4th Band (Golden)/ Tolerance = ± 5%
According to the formula = 1st band 2nd band * 10^3rd/Multiplier
= 10 * 10^2
= 1000 Ohm ± 5%
5
Here, 1000 * 100 = 50 = 1000 Ohm ± 50
➢ (+ve) = 1000 Ohm + 50 = 1050 Ohm
➢ (- ve) = 1000 Ohm – 50 = 950 Ohm
So, the value of the resistor maybe between 950 Ohm to 1050 Ohm
(950 Ohm ⁓ 1050 Ohm).

5 Band Resistor

Here,
1st Band (Red) = 2
2nd Band (Black) = 0
3rd Band (Black) = 0
4th Band (Green)/Multiplier = 5
5th Band (Golden)/ Tolerance = ± 5%
According to the formula = (1st band 2nd band 3rd band *
10^4th/Multiplier)
= 200 * 10^5
= 20000000 Ohm ± 5%
= 20 MOhm ± 5%
5
Here, 20 * 100 = 1 = 20 MOhm ± 1
➢ (+ve) = 20 MOhm + 1 = 21 MOhm
➢ (- ve) = 20 MOhm – 1 = 19 MOhm
So, the value of the resistor maybe between 19 MOhm to 21 MOhm
(19 MOhm ⁓ 21 MOhm).

6 Band Resistor

Here,
1st Band (Brown) = 1
2nd Band (Black) = 0
3rd Band (Black) = 0
4th Band (Yellow)/Multiplier = 4
5th Band (Golden)/ Tolerance = ± 5%
6th Band (Blue) / Temperature Coefficient = 10 PPM/℃

• 6th number band depends on temperature.

PPM = Parts Per Million

According to the formula = (1st band 2nd band 3rd band *

10^4th/Multiplier)
= 100 * 10^4

= 1000000 Ohm ± 5%
= 1 MOhm ± 5%
5
Here, 1 * 100 = 0.05 = 1 MOhm ± 0.05 , 10 PPM/℃
