Explore the text to speech technology

Chiaki is on her way to work, stuck into a crowded train. Her schedule is packed, leaving her little time
for leisure reading. Determined to finish her favorite novel, she opens the e-book app on her
smartphone. She instructs the app to start where she left off previously. The text to speech technology
in the app begins narrating the book with a clear, expressive voice. As Chiaki listens, she becomes
engrossed in the story, her morning commute flying by.

Like Chiaki, you may have also experienced this technology. The text to speech, or TTS, technology is a
type of assistive technology that converts written text into spoken words. It’s nothing but software
applications that use advanced algorithms and natural language processing to produce human-like
speech.

Typically, the text to speech process goes through three stages. In the first stage of text analysis, the
system breaks down the text into smaller units like sentences and words. In the linguistic analysis
stage, the system converts the processed text into a phonetic or phonemic representation. The system
has to understand the context, grammar, and pronunciation to complete this stage. In the final stage
called speech synthesis, the text to speech system generates audible speech using pre-recorded
voices.

Text to speech ensures access to information for all and improves the efficiency of processes. Here are
some of the use cases you can notice even in your daily routine.

• An Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system from a cellular service provider offers fast
responses to customers, thereby reducing wait time.

• Modern cars incorporate navigation systems with a text to speech system to provide hands-free
directions or read text messages aloud.

• Many online shopping websites include a text to speech system to read product descriptions
aloud, enhancing the customer experience.

• The text to speech system gives independence to visually impaired individuals and helps
students with reading difficulties by reading information aloud. This ensures they have equal
access to information.

• Media and training companies use text to speech technology to produce audiobooks and
voiceovers for videos.

Text to speech technology makes information accessible to all, fostering a more inclusive society. It also
helps businesses in saving costs, offering new services to their customers, and enhancing the overall
experience.

IBM is one of the leading tech companies that offers this service. IBM Watson® Text to Speech converts
written text to natural-sounding voices and multiple languages. Businesses can use it in applications

such as voice-automated chatbots, tools for the disabled or visually impaired people, voice over, and
educational and home-automation solutions.

Text to speech technology has truly transformed communication and accessibility.
