MONKEY MAGIC
We shudder when we start the game, thinking
we’ve got 50 hours ahead of us of battling
monsters with a mere staff. But it’s not long
before we start unlocking spells, and they’re
mostly brilliant. The first freezes our enemy
momentarily in time, allowing us to get some
deliciously cheap hits in. We’d have given one of
our favourite limbs to have had access to that in
Elden Ring. Eventually we also get the power to
temporarily create three clones of ourself, perfect
for dealing with crowds of enemies or just bullying
one poor lone wolf. Then there’s ‘Rock Solid’,
which is effectively a parry, as it turns the
protagonist literally into stone, sending whatever
sucker just hit him ricocheting away. All these
powers are on cooldowns (even the parry, making
this a far more dodge-focussed soulslike than
most). Still, with so much delightful witchcraft at
his fingertips, and more spells steadily unlocked,
isn’t our hero a little overpowered?
