Mr. Peel
Mr. Winkelhorst

Name:

C: /9 KU: /26 A: /17

1. i) Describe the transformation that must be applied to the graph of each power function f(x) to
obtain the transformed function
ii) Write the equation of the transformed function

a) f(x) = x3 , y = - f(x + 1) - 2 b) f(x) = x4 , y = 3 f(2x - 4)

KU8
y = -2x y = 3x 5 y = - x4 y = ¾ x6
y = ½ x7 y = 4x 8 y = - x3 y = - 5x 6

Quadrant 3 to Quadrant 4
3, Graph a polynomial function that satisfies each condition:
KU6
a) a cubic function with a positive leading coefficient and 3 x-intercepts

b) a quartic function with a negative leading coefficient and 2 x-intercepts of order 2

c) a quintic function with a negative leading coefficient and 3 x-intercepts

4. Consider the function g(x) = 2x 4 - x 2 + 3x - 5

KU4
a) Without graphing, determine:

i) the end behaviours of ii) which finite differences iii) the value of the constant
the function will be constant differences

b) Sketch a possible graph of the

function (do not attempt to factor)
5. For each polynomial function: i) state the degree and the leading coefficient
KU6 ii) describe the end behaviours of the function
iii) determine the zeros and their order

a) f(x) = (x)(4 - x)(x - 3) b) y = (3x + 2) 2 ( x - 3) 2 (x + 4)

6. A quartic function has zeros of -3, 1(order 2) and 2

A8
a) Write a general equation for a polynomial function satisfying these conditions

b) Write the equation for the specific function meeting the above conditions and passing
through the point (-1, 12)

c) Sketch the graph of the

function in part b.

d) State the interval(s) over which the function is positive and the interval(s) over which it
is negative.
7. The following graph shows the price of gas, P (in
cents) over a 24-month period

a) What does the graph indicate about gas

prices in
C3 i) the first 6 months?

ii) the second 6 months?

iii) overall during the last year?

b) Determine the average rate of change in gas prices in each of

A3 the above intervals. (Estimate the P values that you need as closely as you can)

(i) (ii) (iii)

8. The profit earned by a company is modelled by

P(x) = -0.1 x 4 + 1.8 x 3 - 5.7 x 2 + 45 x- 80
A6 where P(x) is the profit in thousands of dollars and x is the number of units manufactured,
expressed in thousands of units.

Find the instantaneous rate of change in profit when production is 6000 units and also when
production is 12000 units. Be careful that you pay attention to units, both during the
calculations and also when expressing your answer.
