Question (1)
Consider an automobile traveling at a constant speed along a road. Determine the direction of the heat and
work interactions, taking the following as the system: (a) the car radiator, (b) the car engine, (c) the car
wheels, (d) the road, and (e) the air surrounding the car.

Question (2)
As 5 kg of steam contained within a piston–cylinder assembly undergoes an expansion
from state 1 to state 2, the specific internal energy mentioned in the figure. During the
process, there is heat transfer to the steam with a magnitude of 80 kJ. Also, a paddle
wheel transfers energy to the steam by work in the amount of 18.5 kJ. There is no
significant change in the kinetic or potential energy of the steam. Determine the energy
transfer by work from the steam to the piston during the process, in kJ.

Question (3)
A gas is contained in a vertical, frictionless piston–cylinder device. The piston has a mass of
3.2 kg and a cross sectional area of 35 cm2. A compressed spring above the piston exerts a
force of 150 N on the piston. If the atmospheric pressure is 95 kPa, determine the pressure
inside the cylinder.

Question (4)
A vertical piston–cylinder device contains a gas at a pressure of 105 kPa. The piston has a mass of 7 kg and
a diameter of 14 cm. Pressure of the gas is to be increased by placing some weights on the piston. Determine
the local atmospheric pressure and the mass of the weights that will
double the pressure of the gas inside the cylinder.

Question (5)
The water in a large lake is to be used to generate electricity by the installation of a hydraulic turbine-
generator at a location where the depth of the water is 60 m. Water is to be supplied at a rate of 5500 kg/s.
If the electric power generated is measured to be 1860 kW and the generator efficiency is 93 percent,
determine (a) the overall efficiency of the turbine—generator,
(b) the mechanical efficiency of the turbine, and
(c) the shaft power supplied by the turbine to the generator.

Question (6)
Two sites are being considered for wind power generation. In the first site, the wind blows steadily at 8 m/s
for 3000 hours per year, whereas in the second site the wind blows at 11 m/s for 1600 hours per year.
Assuming the wind velocity is negligible at other times for simplicity, determine which is a better site for
wind power generation. Hint: Note that the mass flow rate of air is proportional to wind velocity.

Question (7)
When a system is taken from state l to state m along path lqm, 168 kJ of heat
flows into the system, and the system does 64 kJ of work:
(i) How much will be the heat that flows into the system along path lnm if the
work done is 21 kJ?
(ii) When the system is returned from m to l along the curved path, the work done
on the system is 42 kJ. Does the system absorb or liberate heat, and how much of
the heat is absorbed or liberated?
(iii) If Ul = 0 and Un = 84 kJ, find the heat absorbed in the processes ln and nm.
