Hi Maria,
I’m sorry I haven’t written for ages, but we’ve
had some problems here. You know we
moved house last year. Well, we now live in
Grantly.
It’s a lovely village, and much nicer – and
larger – than the village where we used to live.
Before we moved, Dad checked out the area
for flooding problems because two years ago
there were some bad floods in a village five
miles from here. He was told that there was no
risk of floods in this area. Our house is a long
way from the river and it was considered to be
really safe. But guess what? Last month it
rained and rained for days. The river got higher
and higher and then it flooded. The whole area
was underwater – our house included. The
water was about twenty centimetres deep in
our downstairs rooms. We had to stay with
friends for two weeks. The water went away
after a few days, but it was a disaster. All the
furniture downstairs and our carpets were

have insurance, so we will get some money
back. But we’ve all lost precious possessions. I
lost my laptop.
The sun is shining now, but I know it’s going to
take a long time before everything in the house
is repaired. We’re staying with my aunt and
uncle while we clean the house and decorate it.
So I’m afraid I can’t invite you to come and stay
with me at the moment! You know, they teach
us at school about climate change and what it
means, but you don’t really understand how
serious it is until something like this happens. I
hope you live on a hill!
Write soon and send me your news. It will cheer
me up!
Love,
Bess
