SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
GOALS
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT :
The term 'Sustainable Development' can mean different things to
different people in different situations. This makes the precise definition of
the term difficult. One of the most frequently used definition of sustainable
development is, "Sustainable development is the development that
meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of
future generations to meet their own needs."

INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

GOALS :
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by the
United Nations in September 2015 as a global agenda to address
pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges by 2030.
Encompassing 17 goals, these objectives aim to eradicate poverty, ensure
inclusive and equitable education, promote gender equality, and foster
sustainable economic growth. Building upon the Millennium Development
Goals, the SDGs represent a holistic and interconnected approach,
integrating environmental sustainability with social and economic progress.
Rooted in a commitment to leaving no one behind, the goals aspire to
create a world where prosperity is shared, inequalities are diminished,
and environmental stewardship is prioritized. The SDGs reflect a
collective effort to achieve a more sustainable and equitable future,
encouraging international cooperation and partnership for the well-being
of present and future generations.

GOAL 2 : ZERO HUNGER
“End of hunger , achieve food security and
improved nutrition and promote sustainable
agriculture.”

INTRODUCTION :
Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2 or Global Goal 2) aims to achieve
"zero hunger". It is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established
by the United Nations in 2015.

SDG 2 highlights the "complex inter-linkages between food security,

nutrition, rural transformation and sustainable agriculture". According
to the United Nations, there are around 690 million people who are hungry,
which accounts for slightly less than 10 percent of the world population. One
in every nine people goes to bed hungry each night, including 20 million
people currently at risk of famine in South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and
Nigeria.

TARGETS :
• TARGET 2.1 : By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people,
in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including
infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round
• TARGET 2.2 : By 2030, end all forms of malnutrition, including
achieving, by 2025, the internationally agreed targets on stunting and
wasting in children under 5 years of age, and address the nutritional
needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating women and older
persons.
• TARGET 2.3 : By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and
incomes of small-scale food producers through secure and equal
access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge,
financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and
non-farm employment.
• TARGET 2.4 : By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems
and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity
and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen
capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought,
flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and
soil quality.
• TARGET 2.5 : By 2020, maintain the genetic diversity of seeds,
cultivated plants and farmed and domesticated animals and their
related wild species and promote access to and fair and equitable
sharing of benefits .
• TARGET 2.6 : Increase investment, including, in rural infrastructure,
agricultural research and extension services, technology development
and plant and livestock gene banks in order to enhance agricultural
productive capacity in developing countries.
• TARGET 2.7 : Correct and prevent trade restrictions and distortions
in world agricultural markets, including through the parallel elimination
of all forms of agricultural export subsidies and all export measures
with equivalent effect.
