:Course Description /‫ وصف المادة‬.18

This module is intended to give students an overview of the modern communication and
network principles and technologies. Topics include: communication concepts, types of
networks, transmission media, analog and digital communication, transmission impairments,
circuit switching vs. packet switching, digital packet switching and routing, network topology
and architecture, OSI and TCP/IP Protocols and layers, flow and error control, LAN overview
and a casual introduction to the characteristics of some WAN protocols. Another objective is
how to determine basic requirements for a LAN network such as choice of topology and
transmission medium. The students should understand the principles of communication model
and networks and knowing the current status and direction of technology, i.e. a rapidly
increasing in the internet technology.

• Develop a solid understanding of data communications and networking
principles.
• Understand the OSI reference models and layered protocols
• Explore LAN design, configuration and implementation.
• Be aware of Ethernet LANs.
• Learn the essential practical experience for dealing with switches, routers and
network cabling and routing.
