At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

b. Identify the specific use of each modal;
c. Demonstrate appreciation and understanding of modals through a riddle;and
d. Construct sentences using modal verbs

a. Motivational Activity
The teacher will give an activity called “What am I?”. During this activity, they will be
shown a series of riddles. Their task is to guess what the correct answer for each
riddle. The student who manages to answer correctly will receive a point in their
participation.

b. Presentation
The teacher will then ask the students for their insights on what they have noticed
from the riddles that were presented during the activity in relation to what their
lesson will be. After receiving insights from the students, the teacher will present
the target objectives of the lesson in the visual learning material (PowerPoint
presentation) before proceeding with the discussion.
c. Discussion Proper
Modal verbs are a special kind of auxiliary verbs or helping verbs. A modal
verb provides additional meaning and specific meaning to the main verb of a
sentence.
Take note of these important rules when using modals:
Modals are always followed by the base form of verb.
Example:
David will play a game later. You should come with us to the party.
You must do your homework. I couldn’t get any sleep last night.

d. Generalization
The teacher will call specific students to generalize the topic in the form of
questioning. The students will give their answer verbally once they are called by
the teacher. If the assigned student is unable to answer the question, then the
teacher may either call another student or resort to asking for voluntary answers.

e. Application
The teacher will provide some sample situations and questions. The students will
need to create a sentence using modals in that specific situation.
1.) You are going to the beach for the weekend. What are you going to do at the
beach? (talk about possible things to do)
2.) You want to borrow your classmate’s laptop to watch some anime. (Ask for
permission politely)
3.) You want to showcase your talents to someone. (talk about your abilities or
talents)
4.) School is starting soon. What are the things you need to prepare? (talk about
necessity)
5.) Your friend received poor results on his/her test. (give him/her advice on what
to do)
IV. EVALUATION
Individual activity:
The teacher will provide the students a worksheet about modal verbs for them to
answer. They are to submit their finished output as an attachment (either handwritten
answers or typewritten) through the Google classroom which is listed as classwork.
The deadline for the finished output will be on the Monday, March 8 at 11:59 pm
(worksheet is attached)
