INVESTIGATION
Effect of Sunlight on the Growth of Seed

Name: Rating:
Grade and Section: Date:

A. S.P.A.C.E. Lab Objectives:

At the end of the laboratory study, I should be able to:
1. Perform a simple investigation at home using the scientific method.
2. Determine the effect of sunlight on the growth of seeds.
B. Materials:
The S.P.A.C.E. Lab will require the following:
Any type of seeds that grows easily except munggo (e.g. tomato, pechay) garden
soil, 2 pots, marker, ruler, and colored pencils.
C. Question:

How does ________________ (manipulated variable) affect seed growth?

HYPOTHESIS: Research the effect of sunlight on seed growth. Then formulate your
hypothesis using the proper format – “if …., then …. because …”

If _____________________________________ (manipulated variable)

then __________________________ (responding variable)

because _____________________________________________

VARIABLES:
What is the independent variable that you are testing?

___________________________________.
What is the dependent variable in your experiment?

_____________________________________

D. Procedure:
1. Label the pots. Put soil in each pot.
2. Put 3 seeds on the surface of each pot. Cover with some soil.
3. Water the pots with an equal amount of water.
4. Place pot A under direct sunlight and pot B in a shaded area.
5. Water them every day for ten days. Measure the height of the seeds in each
pot every day.
6. Record your results in the table provided
What does your experiment setup look like? Paste the picture.

Set up A Set up B

E. My Data and Observation:

A. Record your measurements in the table below:

Height (cm)

Set up Day 1 Day 3 Day 5 Day 7 Day 10

A ( with sunlight)

B ( without
sunlight)

B. Use the data that you have collected to create an appropriate graph. Used colored pencils
for each setup. Include an appropriate title, and labels, including units.
Conclusion:
Do the results of your experiment support your hypothesis? Based on the results
what can you conclude?

SCORING RUBRIC:
The experiment shall be rated based on the criteria below:
5 – Excellent; 4 – Very Good; 3 – Good; 2 – Poor; 1- Very Poor

CRITERIA RATING
1. Data is accurately and precisely presented.
2. Answers to the questions are relevant and accurate.
3. Analysis shows an in-depth understanding of the principle/theory and/or concept.
4. Conclusion is comprehensive and related to the objective/s stated.
5. Experiment paper is neatly submitted.
