Solve the following equations:


(i) (23𝑥+1 )(5𝑦+4 ) = 20 (ii) (2𝑥−𝑦 )(3𝑥+2𝑦 ) =72 (iii) (23𝑥 )(3𝑦 ) =10
2. a) Consider the following geometric progression 4, 8, 16, 32.
Find i) the 16th term ii) nth term iii) the sum of first 4 terms of this
series.
b) If you deposit $6500 into an account paying 8% annual interest, how much money
will be in the account after 3 years if i) it is compounded monthly ii) it is
compounded quarterly iii) it is compounded semi annually iv) it is
compounded annually
c) Determine the payment needed to settle an invoice with a net amount of Tsh
9,500,000 dated January 10, terms 10/20, n/40, if the invoice is paid (i) on february 1
(ii) on march 15
3. An item was sold for Tsh 1,000,000. If the profit earned on it was Tsh 130,000;
determine:
i. the buying price
ii. the percentage profit obtained

4. Mr. James bought a lamp that cost $100. To make his desired profit, he needed 65% markup
on cost. What is James’ dollar markup? What is his selling price?

5. a) Let 𝑃 and 𝑄 be two finite sets such that 𝑛(𝑃) = 25, 𝑛(𝑄) = 30 and
𝑛(𝑃 ∩ 𝑄) =12. Find 𝑛(𝑃 ∪ 𝑄) and 𝑛(𝑃 − 𝑄)

b) Out of 400 students of a university, 102 studied Business Mathematics, 110 studied
Management and 152 studied Business Law: of the total 27 studied Management and
Business Law; 36 studied Business Mathematics and Business Law; 18 studied Business
Mathematics and Management; 11 studied all the three subjects.
(i) How many students did not study any subject? (ii) How many students studied only
one subject?
