What are both the teacher and students doing? How does communication technology
work?

No one is permitted to leave their homes during the pandemic outbreak. Due to
this, Sir Darryl holds his learning sessions online using online tools like Google
Meet. Through video calls, he monitors and updates his students while he uses
Zoom & Microsoft Teams to attend organizational meetings. Despite the
limitations imposed by the coronavirus, the teachers, the students, and other
employees were able to communicate with one another. Through their gadgets and
other mobile devices of which, are examples of communication technology.

3
Let’s Study and Analyze

The Internet

The Internet started in the 1960s as a way for government researchers

1960s to share information. Dozens of innovative scientists, programmers,
and engineers created the internet.

Sometime in the 1960s, the Advanced Research Projects Agency

(ARPA) of the United States Department of Defense thought of linking
computers throughout the United States. Its purpose was to create a
nationwide computer network that could function even if a large portion
of it were destroyed in a nuclear war or natural disaster. The whole
operation was referred to as ARPANET.

The first computers with the size of a small house. Computers in those
years were large and immobile and, in order to make use of information
stored in any one computer, one had to either travel to the site of the
computer or have magnetic computer tapes sent through the conventional
postal system.

The first message sent over the ARPAnet was a "node-to-node"

1969 transmission between two computers on October 29, 1969.

4
Technology continued to advance in the
1970s. After researchers created
Transmission Control Protocol and
1970s Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP, a
communications paradigm that
established guidelines for how data might
be sent between various networks.

In the 1970s, only government offices and

few universities were linked for research
and communication. By the mid-1980s the
network was widely used by researchers
and developers. But it was also being
picked up by a growing number of other
communities and networks. Joseph Carl Robnett
Licklider popularized the
concept of a computer
"Intergalactic Network".
Within a short period of

the key components of the
internet.

In 1982, Drew Major and Kyle Powell

1982 developed the first ever computer game
Snipes, an action game to be played on
personal computers over the network.

Gradually, the internet evolved from being

a limited military linkage system to being
a worldwide communication system. In
January 1983, the ARPANET
1983 standardized the Transmission Control
Protocol (TCP)/ Internet Protocol (IP)
protocols adopted by the Department of Scientists Robert Kahn and
Defense (DOD). The Defense Vinton Cerf developed
Communications Agency decided to split Transmission Control
the network into a public ‘ARPANET’ and Protocol and Internet

In January 1984, Apple
announced the Macintosh.
Its user-friendly interface
swelled the ranks of new
1987 computer users. Between the
beginning of 1986 and the end
of 1987, the number of
networks grew from 2,000 to
nearly 30,000.

The Mac, short for Macintosh is a family of

personal computers designed and
marketed by Apple Inc.

In 1988, Internet started to become more international with the

1988 connection of Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Norway and
Sweden.

In 1989, the number of internet hosts increased from 80,000 to 160,000.

1989 Australia, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New
Zealand and the United Kingdom joined the Internet.

In 1992, during its first phase of popularization, the global networks

1992 connected to the Internet exchanged about 100 Gigabytes (GB) of traffic
per day. In 2014 global Internet traffic peaked at 16,000 Gigabytes per
second, with experts forecasting the number to quadruple in the next
decade to come.

Today, millions of people all over the world have access to the internet.
2023 Nearly five decades after the development of ARPANET, the Internet has
arguably become a driving force in the daily routines of more than three
billion people worldwide.

How well did you find the lesson? Now let’s proceed to the next topic.

6
Uses of the Internet in our Daily Lives

Have you experienced searching your lessons online? How about downloading
your favorite music in Spotify, watching movies in Youtube, and playing your best
online games? All these make our lives convenient with the internet.

The following are the uses of the internet.

You may use Electronic Mail, commonly

shortened to “email,” to send messages to
your friends and classmates. Modern
forms of web-based email clients are
Gmail and Outlook.

You can conveniently access a wide range of

information in many different formats, such
as videos and audio recordings that may not
be present in a library collection. The Internet
databases make it easier to find useful
lessons at short notice.

You can download files such as

documents, movies, photos, and
music.

You can call your friends and family and

see them face-to-face using a computer's
webcam or other electronic hardware
devices with a video-capable camera, like
a smartphone, tablet, or video-capable
phone system.

7
You can enjoy and stimulate your brain by playing
computer games such as racing, puzzles and other
interactive games. Computer games may help you
increase your problem-solving skills, keep your mind
active, enhance your memory and may improve your
ability to multitask.

You can now be updated with current

events, economic situation, sports, games,
entertainment, trade and commerce through
online newspapers and magazines.

Rather than going to different offices, you

can now apply online using various job-
hunting websites. Through this, you can
search for the job you want with ease,
look up for possible employers quickly
and efficiently, communicate easily, and
always be updated on the status of your
application.

Your parents may use the internet

to monitor their bank account's
balance, conduct transactions,
and send money via the internet.
They may also use it to view and
pay bills online.

Now study the advantages and disadvantages of the internet.

8
Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet

Today, 4.8 billion people use the internet. Banks, government agencies,
businesses to various departments are benefiting from the internet. Similarly, the
