ASSIGNMENT: VERBAL AND NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION

1. What is the difference between verbal and non-verbal communication? Provide Five
example in each kind.
- Verbal communication involves the use of words, spoken or written, to convey a
message. Non-verbal communication, Relies on body language, facial expressions,
gestures, and other forms of unspoken cues to express ideas or emotions.
- Examples of verbal communication:
● Having a conversation with a friend.
● Giving a speech at an event.
● Writing an email or letter.
● Participating in a debate.
● Answering questions during a meeting.
- Examples of non-verbal communication:
● Smiling at someone to show friendliness.
● Nodding your head to signal agreement.
● Crossing your arms to indicate you’re feeling defensive.
● Making eye contact to show attentiveness.
● Using hand gestures to emphasize a point.

2. What special factors influence the kind of register to be used? Why is there a need
to be mindful of these registers?
- The kind of language we use depends on factors like the setting, the relationship
between speakers, the topic being discussed, and the formality of the situation. We
have to adjust the way we communicate based on who we’re talking to. For example,
talking to friends is different from talking to a professor or an elder. Choosing the right
register ensures that we’re respectful and clear. If we’re too formal in a casual setting
or too casual in a formal one, it could cause confusion or make others feel
uncomfortable. It’s about knowing when to use a relaxed tone and when to be more
serious.

3. How can non-verbal cues contribute to communication breakdown? (Breakdown is

miscommunication among participants.)
- How non-verbal Non-verbal cues can be misunderstood. For example, if someone
avoids eye contact, we might think they’re being rude, but they could just be shy or
distracted. If we misread facial expressions or gestures, we might assume the wrong
thing, causing confusion or conflict. Body language that doesn't match the spoken
words can send mixed signals, making it hard for others to know what we really
mean.

4. Do you agree with the quotation” Action speaks louder than words”? Explain.
- Yes, I do. Words are important, but sometimes what we do shows more about how
we feel or what we believe. People can say anything, but their actions, how they treat
others, follow through on promises, or handle responsibilities reveal their true
intentions. For example, someone might say they care about the environment, but if
they’re not making any effort to reduce waste or help out, their actions don’t match
their words. What we do leaves a stronger impact than what we say.
