ABSTRACT

The study investigate the relationship between social media influences and

self-esteem. The researchers noticed that social media can have a great impact to

people and can affect their self-esteem. To identify whether there is a colleration

between self esteem and social media influences, researches conducted the study. The

respondents of this study were the Gen-Z's of Laguna State Polytechnic University-

San Pablo City Campus. This study used a descriptive-correlational design.

The result shows that Gen-Z’s who believe they are highly influence by social

media, however, tended to affect their feelings and emotions. It is evident that social

media influences has a chance to affect the level of self esteem. It was discovered that

even if the Gen-Z view that social media has a good influence to them sometimes they

feel unproud, doubt and tend to compare theirselves on others. According to the

study's findings and conclusions, the researchers recommend that they may always

bear in mind the influences of social media on their self-esteem and inform younger

generations about the effects of social media in their self-esteem for them to avoid

misused of social media and the navigation of online platforms.

Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

In the world, modernization had a great impact. Modernization has tangled

everything in technology to the point where it's difficult to envision a modern

youngster without exposure to social media and smart phones, despite the fact that

smart phones have only been popular among the masses for a decade. Children are not

immune to the effects of technology as it becomes an increasingly important part of

our lives. They grow up with so much exposure in virtual word to prosper in modern

society and one of these aspect is social media.

Internet users worldwide spent an average of 145 minutes per day on social

media, up from 142 minutes the previous year. The Philippines currently has the most

time spent on social media per day, with online users spending an average of three

hours and 53 minutes per day on the platform (Statistica Research Department, 2022).

Social media has been growing exponentially where many people use it to keep in

touch with long-distance friends and family, meet new people, and preserve their own

memories in a public platform.

Heavy usage of social media is synonymous with Generation Z or Gen-Z.

They are the first generation where modernization boomed. Having grown up in a

world connected with internet and mobile devices this generation often seen their free

moments on different social media platforms. Majority of this generations consumes

social platforms such as Tiktok, Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and Twitter.

According to (Jenkinks, 2022), Gen-Z for a various reason use these social media

platforms as maintaining contact with friends and family, establishing a sense of

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

community, seeking solutions to problems or information, seeking ideas or

inspiration, promoting professional endeavors, and expanding one's professional

network.

According to (Livingstone & Bober, 2005), it examined that social media has

an influence on the teenagers in different methods. Social Media is regarded as an

important source of influence, shaping a person's socialization. Throughout this way,

it provides the best framework for interaction with external people, scrolling through

their daily routines, being knowledgeable and updated, and expanding into a global

generation of possible solutions. The way Gen-Z engage with their peers has been

profoundly influenced by social media. As a result of the increasing use of social

media, cyber bullying has become a major public health concern that can lead to

mental and behavioral health problems as well as an increased risk of suicide. Aside

from that you can use social media to engage with your customers and learn what

others are saying about your company. Social media can also be used for advertising,

promotional giveaways, and mobile apps. And it also frequently serves to change or

influence our political views because of the number of ideas, thoughts, and opinions

that circulate through the social media platform.

Social media can be both beneficial and harmful. Children should use social

media because it allows them to share their passions or posts about their favorite

sports, celebrities, artists, and talents with a diverse group of like-minded people.

However, if children use social media as a gauge of their likability or popularity, it

can be harmful (Koutamanis, 2015). Positive online feedback has been shown to boost

self-esteem, while negative feedback has been shown to lower self-esteem

(Valkenburg, 2016) .Interactions on social media can have a positive impact on self-
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

esteem if adolescents feel connected and supported, but some online experiences can

have a negative impact on self-esteem. Cyber bullying or a negative comment do not

always have a negative impact. When a child does not accept the expected or desired

feedback, or feels pressured to "perform" or post appropriate content for "friends," the

pressure or stress can cause anxiety and negatively impact a child's self-esteem.

Gen-Z’s capabilities can also be determined by how they deal with, utilize and

make efficient use of social media on their online space. If they are effectively

managed, they will improve their self esteem such as confidence, identity, a sense of

competence and belongingness . Generation Z may face a variety of challenges. As

part of this generation , we have the ability to help and support them at all times so

that they can cope up the negative impact of social media in their lives. The causes of

these problems should be acknowledge, and the solutions should be pursued to

motivate them. The goal of this study is to determine the effects of social media

influences on the self-esteem of Gen-Z.

Background of the Study

Nowadays, people are depending on social media. People spent their time in

different social media applications such as TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and

YouTube. These websites have turned into a source of information for many people

particularly the lives of Gen-Z's. According (World Economic Forum, 2019) article

report by Global Web Index on 'Social media use by generation,' Gen Z consumes

more time on social media than Millennials, at 2 hours 55 minutes per day.

Gen Z is the first generation to have Internet technology and they have been

exposed to an unparalleled amount of technology during their early life. People in

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

Generation Z are labeled as being so familiar with technology that they spend a large

amount of time interacting on social media websites. Generation Z has a strong sense

of 'virtual bonding,' which aids them in overcoming emotional and psychological

challenges they face in the real world. They also communicate with one another

through social media platforms in the same immediate and efficient manner On social

media platforms, they value innovative styles, interactive messaging, environmental

aspects, through the use of humor (Southgate, 2017) .

Gen-Z’s grew up shaped by technology and the internet has become an

essential part of their everyday life. In order to express themselves, they utilize social

media to share their accomplishments, selfies, and images, as well as TikTok videos

but it may actually have the opposite effect. It can cause self-doubt and low self

esteem by provoking comparison with others. According to Chen& Lee 2013 “Social

media makes people compare themselves to other that lead to psychological distress

and lower self esteem (Chen & Lee, 2013).

Gen Z's ought to be aware of how social media affects their everyday life. The

knowledge identified and reviewed can be exceedingly effective in developing their

self-esteem. Appropriate parental support can help them avoid the potentially harmful

effects of technology and social media. Gen'Zs will be permitted to make advice on

how to be liable and determine to use social media in building self-esteem.Gen'Zs

should use suggestions you create to guide what they should or should not do.

Embracing this modern world may appear to be too simple, however there are number

of difficulties may arise. People can post, watch, and do what they want on social

media, but they must be conscious of what they are doing, because what is good for

you may be bad for others. It can lower their self esteem and may feel bad for
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

themselves. As a Gen-Z, they will have no problems if they can use social media

responsibly and ethically.

Theoretrical Framework

The study is anchored on Social Comparison Theory of Leon Festinger.People

frequently judge their own attractiveness, money, intelligence, and achievement, as

well as those of others. Some studies claim that comparisons of some form occur in

up to 10% of our thoughts. According to the social comparison hypothesis, people

judge their own social and personal worth by how they compare to other people. Leon

Festinger, a psychologist, created the hypothesis in 1954. Later studies have revealed

that persons who frequently compare themselves to others may find desire to improve,

but they may also feel intense discontent, guilt, or remorse, and act out destructively

by lying or eating disorderedly.

The potential for social comparison rises as social networking sites evolve,

making them more dynamic and addictive. When you engage with people you know

instead of sites offering you interesting posts from blended people you associate.

Negative social comparisons affects yourself to people who are more personally

important to you may boost, potentially making the effect of your general evaluation

feel more influential. This also create negative results of self comparison, including

distress, depression, poor self

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter provides readers and other researchers with a literature

background by presenting literature and studies from published, unpublished, and

online sources that are relevant to the research.

Social Media Influences

According to (Vashisht, 2016) on Impact of Social Media on Society, We're

all aware that social media has had a significant impact on our society, industry, and

the global community. Some of the most popular Internet destinations are social

networking websites. They've changed how people communicate and socialize on the

internet. He included that there are various influences of social media including

Politics, Socialization, Cyberbullying, Productivity and Privacy.

Influence on Politics

(Vashisht, 2016) stated that social media has an impact on politics.Every

politician should fit to get on board with social media. This is because social media

sites have influenced several elections and political discussion throughout the world.

In many nations, they have also served to rally people around a cause, inspiring

citizens, movements, and political instability.

In addition According to (Shirky, 2011) , social media platforms have the

potential to strengthen democracies. by voicing public sentiment He believes that

social media can increase freedom and change people's political beliefs by exposing

them to different points of view shared by friends, family, and coworkers.According

to Kruikemeier et al. (2013, p. 54–55), political figures' social media behavior can
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

affect how much the public participates in politics. Therefore, compared to some live

forums or meetings attended by individuals in person, social media provides a better

and more dynamic arena for such diversified political topic matter (Bode, 2016, p.

44).

Influence on Socialization

According to (Vashisht, 2016) people can use social media to reconnect with

old acquaintances, create new friends, exchange content, photos, and participate in a

variety of activities. By engaging with people from other nations, you can learn about

diverse cultures and societies.

In addition (Hansen, 2017), stated that, social media is a collection of online

applications and tools that facilitate communication. Means of encouraging and

promoting knowledge sharing among digital media users, ultimately transforming a

monologue into a dialog (M. Diomidous, A. Magita, P. Panagiotopoulou, & Mantas,

2016) Social media offer a forum for students to interact, communicate, and exchange

emotional intelligence while also looking for others with different viewpoints (Gikas

& Grant, 2013).

Influence on Online Harassment/ Cyberbullying

Harassment by cyber bullies is a significant phenomenon on the social media

(Agrawal & Awekar, 2018).According (C. Van Hee,, et al., 2015)(social networks

provide great opportunities to connect with others, but they also increase the

vulnerability of young people to unwanted phenomena such as cyber damage. On

average, 20% to 40% of all teens are victims of online violence, according to a recent
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

survey. People are commenting hate comments in which they are targeting specific

group characteristics such as race, religion, gender, etc." can adversely affect online

business and the general user experience by leaving feedback to users. It's a big

problem that plagues sexual websites.

Schoolchildren, young girls, and women can become targets of online attacks

that can cause tension and discomfort if you are not vigilant. If you are a victim of

cyberbullying, do not take it lying down; instead, try to pursue necessary legal

proceedings against the offender. (Vashisht, 2016). The victims of cyberbullying,

under great emotional stress, are unable to concentrate on their studies, and thus their

academic progress is adversely affected (Faryadi, 2011).

Influence on Productivity

(Vashisht, 2016) told that social media has an impact on productivity. Many

businesses have restricted social media sites from their office Internet because

addicted staff use them to avoid focusing on their work. In fact, research suggest that

social media addicts among employees cost British businesses billions of dollars per

year in missed productivity.

In addition (Junco, Heibergert, & Loken, 2010)concluded in his study that

social media are a group of internet sites, applications, and activities that encourage

sharing, involvement, and community engagement. They spend time on online social

networking sites connected to student engagement and serve as encouragement for

academic performance (Fan & Williams, C. M., 2010).

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

Influence on Privacy

(Vashisht, 2016) stated that what you share on the internet can come back to

haunt you if you aren't careful. Sharing personal information on social media can

expose users to crimes such as identity theft, stalking, and more. Many companies

conduct an Internet background check before hiring an employee.

In addition (Cross, 2014) concluded in his study that social media are a

powerful tool for interacting with people online, but because users routinely and

freely reveal personal information, they may also pose a risk to users' privacy and

security. Photographs tend to be where the most information can be acquired because

they can tell where a person is, who they are with, and what they are doing (Fox,

Osborn & Warber, 2014. Furthermore, (Tubaro, Casilli, A. A, & Sarabi, Y., 2013)

stated that nowadays, people voluntarily reveal specifics about their everyday

routines, including posting their locations with friends or even total strangers. Social

media intrusions into users' lives have given rise to a new theory that claims the "end

of privacy," which is a contentious debate that must be taken seriously.

Self-Esteem

According to (Cherry, 2021),Self-esteem can be described as how much you

enjoy and appreciate yourself regardless of the situation. Many variables influence

your self-esteem including confidence, identity, sense of belonging and feeling of

competence. And having a positive sense of self-worth can affect your motivation,

mental health, and general quality of life. Self-esteem that is either excessively high

or too low, on the other hand, can be harmful. Understanding your individual level of

self-esteem can assist you in finding the correct balance for you.Interactionists like
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

James Baldwin, Charles Cooley, and George Mead believed that the "self" was

socially formed and that social interactions and other people's ideas played a part in

how the self was shaped. A person's socialization experiences have the power to

significantly change the valence of their self-attributes, resulting in both positive and

negative judgments. When peers or caregivers approve of you, you internalize that as

acceptance of who you are. However, if peers or caregivers reject you, punish you, or

neglect you, you internalize the opposite of that (Harter, 2012).

Social media use and self-esteem have a complicated relationship because

studies typically discover a diverse pattern of associations and meta-analyses typically

find minor, but statistically significant, statistical effects. According to recent study

measuring person-specific within-person effects, social media use does not have an

impact on self-esteem for the majority of users, but it does have an impact on a tiny

minority of users in either a positive or negative way. This shows that the real

connection between using social media and having high self-esteem is individual-

specific and dependent on usage and susceptibilities (P.Cingel, Krause, & C.Carter,

2022).

According to (Kraus, Baum, Baumann, & Krasnova, 2017) on their study

entitled Unifying the Detrimental and Beneficial Effects of Social Network Site se on

Self-esteem, “ The accessibility and quality of self-evaluative information are

changed as a result of the unique characteristics of the social networking site

environment, which has consequences on users' self-esteem that are unique to the

online environment.” The evaluated research' findings indicate that using social

networking sites to compare oneself to others primarily lowers users' self-esteem. On

the other hand, gaining good social feedback from others or using these platforms to
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

reflect on oneself are primarily linked to advantages for users' self-esteem. However,

when projecting individual effects, inter-individual variations and the particular

activities individuals engage in on these platforms should be taken into account.

SYNTHESIS

We are influenced by social media in a variety of ways. It has the ability to

impact people's political views and opinions in terms of politics. When it comes to

online harassment and cyber bullying, social media has an impact on people by

causing them to receive unpleasant and offensive messages. In terms of productivity,

social media improves the quality of communications, which leads to increased

productivity. It is beneficial to maintain contact with your coworkers. It also provides

you with work-related information. In terms of privacy, social media platforms

continuously make decisions about how to handle your security.

On the other hand, Self esteem is the way we respect and view ourselves. It is

associated with self identity where a strong self esteem enables us to feel better about

our self identity. It connect us in a sense of belongingness where we feel accepted

among our selected friends allow us to boom our self esteem. It link us being

competence where we feel our worth when we have a high level of self esteem that

allow us to willingly try new things. These related studies are critical for us since they

will serve as the foundation for various variables in our research.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter provides an overview of the research design used in the study. The

study's participants, the research instrument used, the research procedure imposed and the

statistical treatment used to evaluate the data gathered.

Research Design

The study used the quantitative approach of research employing the descriptive

method of research. This study included correlation analysis is focusing on Social media

influences on the self-esteem of Gen-z’s. Descriptive research is a useful research tool that

allows a researcher to collect data and use statistical analysis to characterize the

demographics of that data..

Research Procedure

The researcher utilized the survey sample method to analyze the respondents, and a

survey questionnaire will be given out through online using internet platforms. The

researchers will evaluate, graph, and tabulate the results once all of the data and

information has been collected.

Respondents of the Study

This study included 100 Gen-Z’s in Laguna State Polytechnic University San

Pablo City Campus and served as the study respondents.

Research Instrument

Construction. The researcher created a researcher-made questionnaire addressing

the social media influences and adapt questionire for the self-esteem. The comprehensive
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

questionnaire was divided into three parts: the students' demographic profile, Influences of

Social Media and Self Esteem.

Part1.Demographic Profile. This part dealt with the personal information of the

students-respondents. It includes the name (optional), grade level, sex.

Part 2. Influences of Social Media . This part dealt with using social media

platforms in terms of politics, business, socialization, online harassment or cyber bullying,

productivity and privacy. This part revealed how Gen- Z are engaged and influenced by

Social Media.

Part 3. Self Esteem. The study used The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. This scale is

intended to measure a person's overall self-esteem.

Validation. The researcher had sent to her research adviser and other panel

members for feedback and suggestions on how to improve the questionnaire. This allowed

the researcher to come up with clear sentences that would accurately assess each student.

Statistical Treatment

Simple descriptive statistics like percentages were used in the study. Meanwhile,

the researcher used the Likert's Scale to analyze the influences of social media in terms of

politics, socialization, online harassment or cyber bullying, productivity and privacy and

assess the respondents' level of self-esteem. Pearson-Product Moment of Correlation

Coefficient (PPMC) was used to determine the significant relationship between social

media influences towards their level of self esteem.

routinely and voluntarily divulge personal information, they may also pose a risk to

users' security and privacy.

In addition, (Tubaro, Casilli, A. A, & Sarabi, Y., 2013) stated that nowadays,

people voluntarily divulge specifics about their daily activities, including sharing their

locations to friends or even total strangers. Social media invasions into users' life have

given rise to a new theory that claims the "end of privacy," which is a contentious

debate that must be taken seriously.

his study that individuals with high self-esteem can face scenarios positively and

confidently; they have a high tolerance for frustration; they accept early

responsibilities, correctly assess situations, and communicate positive feelings about

themselves; they have good self-control, and they believe that the things they are

experiencing are the result of their own actions and behaviors.

In addition, according to (Mackinnon, 2015)people with low self-esteem have

a negative attitude toward people, things, and personal circumstances. Furthermore,

Stavropoulos (2015) claims that depression, aggression, and a reduced ability to

overcome difficulties are all associated with low self-esteem.

Table 7 reveals that there is no significant relationship between Self-esteem

and Social Media influences in terms of Politics, Socialization, Cyberbullying,

Productivity and Privacy.

This implies that there is no way to separate self-esteem from the social media

on its influences. Currently, social media is the most widely used medium for a

variety of uses. It has nearly fully evolved into a modern instrument that is both

common and essential for everything.Gen-Z’s who believe they are highly influence

by social media, however, tended to affect their feelings and emotions. It is evident

that social media influences has a chance to affect the level of self esteem. It was

discovered that even if the Gen-Z view that social media has a good influence to them

sometimes they feel unproud, doubt and tend to compare theirselves on others.
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

However, in terms of the influence of politics, there is no significant

manifested in self-esteem. Even though they have conversation and discussion with

other people about their point of views in politics it doesn't mean that it can affect

their self esteem. It is because they have strong political beliefs which make them

confident. In terms of the influence of socialization, there is no significant manifested

in self-esteem. Even though social media helps them to have a high level of social

skills in terms of in interacting it doesn't mean that it can affect their self esteem. It is

because they have a social netiquette they choose who they interact and

communicate. The social media influence on cyberbullying does not negatively affect

Gen Z's sense of self-esteem. It is because they have high level of personality to

handle adversity in a positive way and also they can use this experience to raise

awareness about the bullies and offer advice to the victim to take it as encouragement

to show that they can do better. In terms of productivity, there is no significant

manifested in self-esteem. Even though social media helps them to gain knowledge,

advance in their careers and be more productive it doesn't mean that it can fully affect

their self-esteem but it has a chance. It is because when they feel productive they

experience several emotions including sense of accomplishment, happiness being

proud of your work, feeling capable, and a sense of relief. And when they feel

unproductive they experience intensity of loss, guilt, frustration, anger, self-doubt and

incapacity. In terms of the influence of privacy, there is no significant manifested in

self-esteem. Even though they feel secured about their personal information it doesn't

mean that it can affect their self esteem. It is because they have a deep sence of

security where they filter what information will they post/share on others and it makes

them accountable and confident enough for their own personal safety.
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

According to (P.Cingel, Krause, & C.Carter, 2022).Social media use and self-

esteem have a complicated relationship because studies typically uncover a diverse

pattern of associations and meta-analyses uncover minor but statistically significant

statistical effects. According to a recent study that measured person-specific within-

person effects, social media use has no effect on self-esteem for the vast majority of

users, but it does have an impact on a tiny minority of users, either positively or

negatively. This demonstrates that the true relationship between using social media

and having high self-esteem is individual-specific and based on usage and

susceptibility.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary of findings, conclusion of the study and

recommendation.

Summary of the findings

1. Perception on Social Media Influences

The findings show how social media might influence respondents. Politics,

socialization, cyberbullying, productivity, and privacy were all factors that Gen-Z

believed may impact them through social media. By exposing them to different points

of view held by friends, social media can effectively influence their political views

and beliefs. In terms of socialization, they strongly believed that social media can

increase feelings of connection, closeness, and camaraderie while simultaneously

lowering feelings of sadness. They also believed that social media could be used to

raise awareness of cyberbullying and act as a forum to stop it. In terms of productivity

they believe that social media enhances their knowledge and abilities that helps them

to be productive. And lastly, in privacy they believe that social media helps the to be

educated on the best ways of protecting themselves and their data which makes them

feel secured..

2. Level of Gen-Z's Self Esteem

The result shows the perception of the respondents regarding to their self esteem.
PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

Wherein Gen-Z have moments when they doubt their abilities, unproud and feel

useless in this case this might be a somewhat lower their self esteem.

3. Correlation between Social Media Influences and Self Esteem

The findings indicate a weak association between Gen-Z self-esteem and

social media influences such politics, socialization, cyberbullying, productivity, and

privacy. Overall, it shows that there is no significant relationship between social

media influences and self-esteem.

Conclusion

The study's findings served as the basis for the conclusion.

1.There is no significant relationship between Social Media Influences and Self Esteem.

Thus, the hypothesis posited is sustained.

Recommendation

The following recommendations were made based on the conclusions drawn from the

study's findings:

1) To the respondents of this study or Gen-Z's,that they may always bear in mind the

influences of social media on their self-esteem.

2) To parents who can educate and encourage their children how to appropriately and

effectively use social media.

3) To teachers can boost the self esteem of the students by pointing out the advantages

and disadvantages of social media by gathering accurate information that

PAGE \* MERGEFORMAT 66

corresponds to their needs.

4) To the future researchers, might do a follow-up study by exploring additional

variables and factors that have an impact on it.

5) To the community ,this study may help them inform younger generations about the

effects of social media in their self-esteem for them to avoid misused of social

media and the navigation of online platforms.
