ASSIGNMENT – 2

MARKS - 20

1. Two Carnot heat engines A and B are operating in series. The heat engine A receives heat
from first reservoir and rejects the waste heat to second reservoir at temperature T. The
heat engine B receives this energy rejected by the engine A, converts some of it to work, and
rejects the rest to third reservoir at XXX K. If the thermal efficiencies of heat engines A and
B are the same, determine the temperature T of the second reservoir. A heat engine B
operating between first and third reservoirs is having a Carnot efficiency of 81.25%. Show
the arrangement using a simple sketch. (XXX represents the 5th, 6th and 7th digits of your
Roll No. eg: For B220456MT, XXX = 456) (3 Marks)

2. Starting with the Tds relation, Tds = dh - vdP, show that for an ideal gas with constant
specific heats, the isentropic process is given by
𝑇 𝑃
=
𝑇 𝑃

, where k = cp/cv. (3 Marks )

3. A heat engine receives heat from a source at 1000°C and rejects the waste heat to a sink at
50°C. If heat is supplied to this engine at a rate of 100 kJ/s, what is the maximum power
this heat engine can produce? (2 Marks )

4. A Carnot heat engine is operating between a source at TH and a sink at TL. If it is desired
to double the thermal efficiency of this engine, what should the new source temperature be?
Assume the sink temperature is held constant. (2 Marks )
5. A refrigerating cycle operating between two temperatures is having a COP of XYZ. If the
same cycle is reversed between the same two temperatures to operate as a heat pump, what
will be its COP? (The value of XYZ is corresponding to the 1/100th of the last 3 digits of your
Roll No. For example, if your roll no is B221201 then XYZ = 2.01) (3 Marks)

6. Unit mass of an ideal gas at temperature T undergoes a reversible isothermal process from
pressure P1 to pressure P2 while losing heat to the surroundings at temperature T in the amount
of q. If the gas constant of the gas is R, find the entropy change of gas “ds” during this process.
(2 Marks )

7. A Carnot heat engine receives heat from a reservoir at 900°C at a rate of 800 kJ/min and
rejects the waste heat to the ambient air at 27°C. The entire work output of the heat engine is
used to drive a refrigerator that removes heat from the refrigerated space at -5°C and transfers
it to the same ambient air at 27°C. Determine (a) the maximum rate of heat removal from the
refrigerated space and (b) the total rate of heat rejection to the ambient air. (5 Marks )
