Solving Systems by Graphing Practice

Problems 1 − 6, without graphing, classify each system as independent, dependent, or inconsistent.

𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = 4 𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑦𝑦 = 6
1.  2.
𝑦𝑦 = 2𝑥𝑥 − 5 8𝑦𝑦 + 4𝑥𝑥 = 24

4𝑥𝑥 − 8𝑦𝑦 = 12 𝑦𝑦 = 9 − 4𝑥𝑥

3.  4.
𝑥𝑥 − 2𝑦𝑦 = −3 𝑥𝑥 − 3𝑦𝑦 = −6

2𝑦𝑦 = 4𝑥𝑥 + 6 𝑥𝑥 + 3𝑦𝑦 = 5

5.  6.
2𝑥𝑥 − 𝑦𝑦 = −3 5𝑥𝑥 + 15𝑦𝑦 = 8

Problems 7 – 14, graph and solve each system.

𝑥𝑥 − 2𝑦𝑦 = 4 𝑥𝑥 − 2𝑦𝑦 + 2 = 0
7.  8.
3𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = 5 2𝑥𝑥 + 3𝑦𝑦 + 18 = 0

𝑥𝑥 + 5 = 0 3𝑥𝑥 + 6𝑦𝑦 = 12
9.  10.
𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = 2 𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑦𝑦 − 8 = 0

9 = 3𝑦𝑦 + 𝑥𝑥 3𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = 3
11.  12.
3𝑦𝑦 = −𝑥𝑥 + 9 𝑥𝑥 − 2𝑦𝑦 = 8

4𝑥𝑥 − 𝑦𝑦 = 7 5𝑥𝑥 + 4𝑦𝑦 = 20

13.  14.
𝑥𝑥 − 2𝑦𝑦 = −7 3𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑦𝑦 = 12

Problems 15 – 18, write and solve a system of equations for each scenario.

15. Your jazz band is selling tickets for a school dance. Student tickets are $8.00 and adult tickets
are $15.00. If you sold 167 tickets for a total revenue of $1630, how many of each ticket did
your band sell?

16. Natalie is planning a summer pool party and needs some fresh fruit. A local fruit stand has
watermelons for $5 each and strawberries for $3 per pint. Natalie purchased 13 items and
spent $45 on fruit snacks, how much of each fruit did she buy?

17. Waffles the dachshund is going to stay in a kennel for a week. The Happy Paws Kennel
charges $36 per day including a free grooming. Miss Bailey’s Bed and Biscuit charges $28
per day plus a grooming charge of $32.
A. Write a system of equations to represent the cost c for d days that Waffles will stay
at a kennel.

B. Find the number of days for which the costs are the same. (Use a graphing calculator.)

C. If Waffles needs to stay for a week, which kennel would be the most reasonable?

18. Elijah and Thomas are working together toward improving their times on the 100-yard dash.
Their best time, in seconds, are recorded by the coach every week.

Week 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Elijah 14.25 13.45 13.62 12.77 12.83 11.97 12.74
Thomas 12.65 12.48 12.10 12.36 11.84 12.17 12.04

A. Use the scores in the table below to find linear models for each boy’s progress.

B. If these trends continue, predict when the two boys will have the same time.
