Lesson 2: Solving Systems Algebraically

Systems that have the same solutions are known as _______________________________

systems. In real-life applications, systems of equations will oftentimes have solutions
that are not exact (integers). Consider the rental car industry, for example. Which is
the better value when renting a vehicle?

Rent-A-Hunk o' Junk charges $29.95 per day and 43¢ per mile.
Tom's Total Wrecks charges $45 per day plus 32¢ per mile.

If you knew when the costs were the same, you could easily determine the better
value for your individual needs.

Solving by Substitution Method

Step 1: Solve one equation for one of the variables.

Step 2: Substitute this expression in the other equation and solve for the variable.
Step 3: Back substitute into one of the original equations.

𝑥𝑥 + 3𝑦𝑦 = 5
EX #1: Solve the system.
−2𝑥𝑥 − 4𝑦𝑦 = −5

Using Substitution to Solve a Problem

EX #2: An online music company offers 15 downloads for $19.75 and 40 downloads
for $43.50. Each price includes the same one-time registration fee. What is the
cost of each download and the registration fee?

Solving by Elimination Method

STEP 1: Both equations should be in standard form 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴 + 𝐵𝐵𝐵𝐵 = 𝐶𝐶

STEP 2: Add the system to eliminate “opposites” of one variable, solve for the
remaining variable.
STEP 3: Back substitute into one of the original equations.

−2𝑥𝑥 + 8𝑦𝑦 = −8
EX #3: Solve the system.
5𝑥𝑥 − 8𝑦𝑦 = 20

Solving an Equivalent System

STEP 1: Use the multiplication property of equality to create additive inverses for one
variable.
STEP 2: Rewrite the system of equations to show at least one variable with additive
inverses.
STEP 3: Then add the system together, you will then have one equation with one
variable only, known as a linear combination of the original equations.
STEP 4: Solve for the remaining variable, then substitute this value back into one of
the original equations to find the missing coordinate for the second variable.

3𝑥𝑥 − 𝑦𝑦 = 8
EX #4: Solve.
𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑦𝑦 = 5

EX #5: Use the elimination method to solve.
3𝑥𝑥 + 7𝑦𝑦 = 15
A.
5𝑥𝑥 + 2𝑦𝑦 = −4

7𝑥𝑥 + 5𝑦𝑦 = 2
B.
8𝑥𝑥 − 9𝑦𝑦 = 17

Solving Systems without Unique Solutions

EX #6: Find the solutions, give an explanation.

−𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = −2 4𝑥𝑥 + 𝑦𝑦 = 6
A. B.
2𝑥𝑥 − 2𝑦𝑦 = 0 12𝑥𝑥 + 3𝑦𝑦 = 18
