DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2

AUGUST 6-9

Characteristics, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Kinds of Quantitative Research

Subject: Research Methods Grade Level: Senior High School
Lesson Objectives:
1. Understand the characteristics of quantitative research.
2. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of quantitative research.
3. Explore different types or kinds of quantitative research.
Materials:
1. Whiteboard and markers
2. Handout: Characteristics, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Kinds of Quantitative
Research
3. Worksheet: Analyzing Quantitative Research Studies
4. Answer Key: Worksheet - Analyzing Quantitative Research Studies
Procedure:
Pre-Activity:
1. Begin the lesson by engaging the students in a brief discussion about research
methods
and their importance in various fields.
2. Ask the students if they are familiar with quantitative research and encourage
them to
share their prior knowledge or experiences, if any.
Activity 1: Characteristics of Quantitative Research (20 minutes)
1. Introduce the concept of quantitative research to the students, explaining that it
involves
collecting and analyzing numerical data to answer research questions.
2. Present the characteristics of quantitative research using the whiteboard or a
PowerPoint
slide.
Some key characteristics to discuss include
a. Objective and systematic
b. large sample sizes
c. Statistical analysis
d. Controlled variables e. Generalizable results
f. Surveys, experiments, and structured observations

Activity 2: Strengths and Weaknesses of Quantitative Research (25 minutes)

1. Distribute the handout: Characteristics, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Kinds of
Quantitative
Research.
2. Have students read the handout individually, highlighting or underlining
important
points.
3. Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a specific strength or
weakness
of quantitative research.
4. In their groups, students discuss their assigned characteristics and come up with
examples to support their points.
5. Ask each group to present their findings to the class, facilitating a class
discussion to
ensure all points are covered.
Activity 3: Kinds of Quantitative Research (25 minutes)
1. Explain to the students that there are different types or kinds of quantitative
research,
each suited for specific research questions.
2. Present an overview of various types of quantitative research, such as
descriptive,
correlational, experimental, and survey research.
3. Provide examples of each type and discuss their applications in different fields or
disciplines.
4. Engage the students in a brainstorming session, where they suggest research
questions
that can be addressed using each type of quantitative research.
Post-Activity:
1. Distribute the worksheet: Analyzing Quantitative Research Studies.
2. Instruct students to analyze the provided research studies, identifying the type of
quantitative research used, its strengths, weaknesses, and any potential
improvements.
3. Allow sufficient time for students to complete the worksheet individually.
4. Collect the worksheets and provide feedback to the students.
Assessment:
●The completion of the worksheet: Analyzing Quantitative Research Studies will
serve as
the assessment for this lesson.
Answer Key: Worksheet - Analyzing Quantitative Research Studies (Note: Answers
may vary
depending on the specific research studies provided.)
1. Research Study: Examining the relationship between sleep duration and
academic
performance among high school students.
●Type of quantitative research: Correlational research
●Strengths: Provides insights into the association between sleep duration and
academic performance, large sample size, can be conducted non-intrusively.
●Weaknesses: Cannot establish causation, dependent on self-reported data, limited
control over extraneous variables.
2. Research Study: Investigating the effects of a new teaching method on student
achievement in mathematics.
●Type of quantitative research: Experimental research
●Strengths: Allows for cause-and-effect conclusions, provides control over
variables, can be replicated for validation.
●Weaknesses: May lack ecological validity, ethical concerns when assigning
participants to different groups, time-consuming and expensive.
3. Research Study: Assessing the effectiveness of a weight loss program through
participant
surveys and body measurements.
●Type of quantitative research: Survey research
●Strengths: Efficient in collecting data from a large sample, relatively low cost, can
capture participants' opinions and experiences.
●Weaknesses: Limited control over data quality, potential for response bias, relies
on self-reported information.
4. Research Study: Describing the demographic characteristics and social media
usage
patterns of young adults.
●Type of quantitative research: Descriptive research
●Strengths: Provides a comprehensive overview of the population's characteristics
and behaviors, can be used as a basis for further research.
●Weaknesses: Cannot establish causation, limited in-depth analysis, may rely on
self-reported data.
Note: The answer key should include specific strengths, weaknesses, and the type
of research for
each study, based on the research studies provided in the worksheet.
Lesson Plan: The Importance of Quantitative Research Across Fields
Subject: Research Methods Grade Level: Senior High School
Lesson Objectives:
1. Understand the importance of quantitative research in various fields.
2. Explore real-life examples of quantitative research applications.
3. Recognize the value of quantitative research skills in academic and professional
settings.
Materials:
1. Whiteboard and markers
2. Handout: Importance of Quantitative Research Across Fields
3. Worksheet: Applying Quantitative Research in Different Fields
4. Answer Key: Worksheet - Applying Quantitative Research in Different Field
