1. Pre-requisite Skills

Note to the teacher: The teacher will discuss the functions of Web Browser and Internet

WHAT IS THE INTERNET?

 The internet is a global network of billions of computers and other electronic
devices. With the internet it’s possible to access any of the information,
communicate with anyone else in the world and do much more.
 You can do all of this by connecting the computer to the internet, which is also
called going online. When someone says a computer is online it’s just another
way of saying it’s connected to the internet.
 Nowadays, people tend to use internet as a source of information for
everyday work. In just one click, a vast of information will immediately
retrieved from the internet which we then collects and select the necessary
that we want to acquire.

So what are the requirements for the internet search?

REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNET SEARCH

1. BROWSERS
 Web Browsers are software installed on your PC. To access the Web, you need a
web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. You must be
using any sort of Web browser while you are navigating through a certain site. On the
Web, when you navigate through pages of information, this is commonly known as
web browsing or web surfing. There are four leading web browsers − Explorer,
Firefox, Chrome, and Safari, but there are many others browsers available. While
developing a site, we should try to make it compatible to as many browsers as
possible. Especially sites should be compatible to major browsers like Explorer,
Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari.

Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer (IE) is a product from software giant
Microsoft. This is the most commonly used browser in the
universe. This was introduced in 1995 along with Windows
95 launch and it has passed Netscape popularity in 1998.

Google Chrome This web browser is developed by Google and its beta
version was first released on September 2, 2008 for
Microsoft Windows. Today, chrome is known to be one of
the most popular web browsers with its global share of
more than 50%.

Mozilla Firefox Firefox is a new browser derived from Mozilla. It was

released in 2004 and has grown to be the second most
popular browser on the Internet.
Safari Safari is a web browser developed by Apple Inc. and
included in Mac OS X. It was first released as a public beta
in January 2003. Safari has very good support for latest
technologies like XHTML, CSS2 etc.

Opera Opera is smaller and faster than most other browsers, yet it
is full- featured. Fast, user-friendly, with keyboard interface,
multiple windows, zoom functions, and more. Java and non
Java-enabled versions available. Ideal for newcomers to the
Internet, school children, handicap and as a front-end for
CD-Rom and kiosks.
2. URL
 Also known as an internet address or web address, a URL (Uniform Resource
Locator) is a form of URI and standardized naming convention for addressing
documents accessible over the Internet and Intranet. An example of a URL is
https://www.google.com, which is the URL for the Google Search website.

Overview of a URL

Below is an additional information about each of the sections of the http URL for the
Computer Hope web page.

3. SEARCH ENGINES
 A search engine is software accessed on the Internet that searches a database of
information according to the user's query. The engine provides a list of results that
best match what the user is trying to find. Today, there are many different search
engines available on the Internet, each with its own abilities and features. The first
search engine ever developed is considered Archie, which was used to search for
FTP files, and the first text-based search engine is considered Veronica. Currently,
the most popular and well-known search engine is Google. Other popular search
engines include AOL, Ask.com, Baidu, Bing, DuckDuckGo, and Yahoo.

Examples of Search Engine with corresponding URL:

Search Engines URL

Google http://www.google.com
Bing http://www.bing.com
Yahoo https://www.yahoo.com
Baidu https://www.baidu.com
Yandex https://yandex.com
Ask https://www.ask.com
DuckDuckGo https://duckduckgo.com

AOL https://www.aol.com
Seznam https://www.seznam.cz

4. BOOKMARKS
 A bookmark is a saved shortcut that directs your browser to a specific webpage.
It stores the title, URL, and favicon of the corresponding page. Saving bookmarks
allows you to easily access your favorite locations on the Web.

All major web browsers allow you to create bookmarks, though each browser
provides a slightly different way of managing them. For example, Chrome and Firefox
display your bookmarks in an open window, while Safari displays them in a list in the sidebar
of the browser window. Internet Explorer uses the name "Favorites" to refer to bookmarks,
and like Safari, it displays all your favorites in a list within the browser window sidebar.

How to view bookmarks using shortcuts

 Google Chrome – Ctrl + Shift + O

 Mozilla Firefox – Ctrl + B or Ctrl + Shift + B
 Microsoft Edge – Ctrl + I
 Opera – Ctrl + Shift + B

5. LINKS
 A link (short for hyperlink) is an HTML object that allows you to jump to a new
location when you click or tap it. Links are found on almost every webpage and
provide a simple means of navigating between pages on the web.

STARTING WEB SEARH

1. Go to a search engine. A search engine is a website that collects and organizes

information on the internet and makes it available for searching. Search engines use
algorithms to display the most relevant search results based on trends, your location,
and sometimes even your web activity. Many search engines have their own mobile
apps that make searching easier on your phone or tablet. Check out some of the
most popular search engines:

2. Type what you're looking for into the search bar. You'll find the search bar at the
top of most search engines. You can enter a single word, a sentence, a phrase,
some numbers, or anything else you wish.[4]

 If you're searching for a multi-word phrase, surround it in quotation marks so the

search engine knows to keep those words together. For example, " n a t u r a l
perfumers", "Trader Joe's dried mangos".
 Sometimes it's helpful to phrase your search like a question, such as W h a t i s
C a r d i B ' s r e a l n a m e ? , W h a t w a s J a m e s B a l d w i n ' s l a s t b o o k ? , or I s
there a vegan Chinese restaurant in Portland?
2.

3. Press the ↵ Enter or ⏎ Return key to run your search. This displays your

search results in a list. If you're using a smartphone or tablet, you may have to
tap Search or Go instead. If you have a KaiOS-based phone, press the center button
to run your search.

4.

4.Click or tap a result to view it. If you've found a website that looks like what you
want, click or tap it to open in your browser. To go back to the search results, click or
tap your browser's back button.

 The results display differently depending on what you're looking for. For example, if
you searched for the word "weather" in Google or Bing, you'll see a weather chart
with the local conditions at the top of your results. If you scroll down a little, you'll
probably see some news articles about the weather, as well as links to popular
weather websites. If you search for an address or location, you'll usually see a map
and/or information about the business or landmark.
 If you scroll down through the first page and don't find what you're looking for, click
or tap the next page number or Next at the bottom to view the next set of results.
 The best results are often on the first page, but sometimes you'll need to dig a little
deeper to find that magic result.
