condition and the main clause tells you the result. The order of the clauses does not
change the meaning.

Conditionals describe the result of a certain condition. The if clause tells you the
condition and the main clause tells you the result. The order of the clauses does not change
the meaning.

Four Types of Conditionals

 Zero Conditional
o used for things that are always true, certain, and has inevitable result
o Structure:
 Condition: if/when + simple present
 Main: Simple present
o Examples
 If ice is heated, it melts
 Water boils when it reaches 100° Celsius.

 First Conditional
o used for things in the future that are likely to happen or have a real possibility of
happening
o It is also common to use this structure with unless, as long as, as soon as or in
case instead of if.
o Structure:
 Condition: if/when + simple present
 Main: will/will not + verb
o instead of will/will not, we can also use modals may, might, shall, should, and
could.
o Examples
 If it does not rain tomorrow, we will go swimming.
 They might attend the party if their mom goes home early.

 Second Conditional
o used to imagine present or future situations that are impossible or unlikely in
reality
o Structure:
 Condition: if/when + simple past
 Main: would/would not + verb
o Examples
 If it were you, I would not book that room.
 They would not join the club if their school did not require it.

 Third Conditional
o use this structure to talk about an imagined past
o Structure:
 Condition: if/when + past perfect
 Main: would/would not + have + past participle of the verb
o Examples
 If I had arrived earlier, I would have won the early bird award.
 He would have been the class president if he had been more friendly.
