GENERAL PHYSICS LET'S PLAY! 4 pics-1 word OBJECTIVES IDENTIFY THE DIFFERENCES OF SCALAR QUANTITY AND VECTOR QUANTITY;
perform three methods of vector addition and;
write a component form of vectors.
SCALAR A quantity that can be completely described by its magnitude and appropriate units. VECTOR A quantity that requires direction as well as magnitude and units to complete its description. VECTOR REPRESENTATION • REPRESENTED BY AN ARROW • LENGTH AND DIRECTION OF ARROW REPRESENTS THE MAGNITUDE AND DIRECTION DIRECTIONS CARDINAL AND INTERMEDIATE DIRECTIONS EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE Specify the directions of vectors A, B, C and D • A is 50° north of east • B is northwest • C is 20 south of east • D is south Specify the directions of vectors A, B, C and D • A is 50° north of east • B is northwest • C is 20 south of east • D is south ADDITION OF VECTORS • Graphical Analysis ⚬ Parallelogram Method ⚬ Polygon Method/ Tip-to-tail Method • Analytical Method ⚬ Law of Cosines and Law of Sines ⚬ Component Method PARALLELOGRAM METHOD • Use a suitable scale • Draw the arrows representing the vectors from a common point • Construct a parallelogram using the two vectors as sides • Draw the diagonal of the parallelogram from the common point. • Measure the length, determine its magnitude. • Determine the angle by using a protractor. POLYGON/TIP-TO-TAIL METHOD • Use a suitable scale • Start from the origin, draw the vector • Connect the tail of the second vector to the head of the last vector • Draw the resultant from the tail of the first vector to the head of the last vector. • Measure the length • Determine the angle using a protractor EXAMPLE Two forces A and B are acting on an object. A is 3.0 N directed North and B is 4.0 N directed 30° North of East. Find the resultant force acting on the object. ANALYTICAL METHOD LAW OF COSINES AND LAW OF SINES COMPONENT METHOD • Resolve vectors into its horizontal and vertical components • Get sum of all horizontal components • Get sum of all vertical components • Use Pythagorean theorem • Solve for the angle EXAMPLE Two forces A and B are acting on an object. A is 3.0 N directed North and B is 4.0 N directed 30° North of East. Find the resultant force acting on the object. EXAMPLE F1 = 4.0 N, east, F2= 6.0 N, northeast, and F3= 8.0 N, south are acting on a particle. Find the resultant.
