Chapter 3 Addition

Learning outcomes: After completing this chapter, students will be able to:

 Add numbers using different techniques.


 Understand the mathematical explanation of addition.
 Know the sign of addition.

Introduction
Students, you have learned reading and writing of
numbers up to 20 in chapter one and you have also
learned comparing and ordering numbers in chapter two.
On this chapter, you will be able to learn adding numbers
up to 20.
3.1 Addition in Story

Learning ability:

 Combing a set of two items and counting them together.


 Understand this sign “+”.
 Understand this sign “-”.

Activity 3.1
1. Melaku has planted 10 trees during winter. Among the planted trees if
three of them become unable to grow, how many trees has grown?
2. I am a number, if you add 4 on me, I will be 10. What am I?

3.5 Double and near Double

 Understanding double and near double numbers.


Activity 3.4 Add the following
dotes.

Focus:

 Double means the addition of two equal numbers.


 Near double means, greater than 1 from the double. Or with different
explanation.
It means, near double = double + 1

Example
A. 2+2=4 this means 4 is the double of 2.
B. 3+3= 6 this means 6 is the double of 3.
C. 7= 6+1 this means 7 is the near double of 3.
D. 8+8= 16 this means 16 is the double of 8.
E. 9=8+1 this means 9 is the near double of 4.

3.6 Adding single Digit Numbers

Learning abilities:

 Adding two single digit numbers.


 Adding numbers horizontally using number line.

Activity 3.5
I have 3 exercise books. My mother added 2 for me. How
many exercise book do I have totally?

Example: 3 + 2= 5 this means, when they are added on the number line,
they will become as follows.

 Adding single digit number with two digit numbers
horizontally by using number line.

Example
3 +11=14 this means, when they are add horizontally
on the number line they will become as follows.
