Welcome to the Technology and Livelihood Education Grade 9 Self-


Learning Module (SLM) Module on Beauty Care (NAIL CARE).
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed
by educators from public institutions to assist you, the teacher or
facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12
Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore,
this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

Welcome!

In this module, you will learn about Beauty Care (NAIL CARE). This module
contains information that is necessary to prepare the learners for today’s world
of work. Included in this module are Perform Hand Spa, Perform Foot Spa,
Perform Manicure and Pedicure and Create Fancy Nail Design. Moreover, this
module will stimulate your mind to know and identify the factors to be
considered in Performing Hand Spa Treatment.

This module is prepared to help you achieve the required Learning


Outcome, Apply Hand Treatment. This will be the source of information that
will enable you to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes in this particular
trade independently at your own pace or with minimum supervision or help from
your teacher.

- Read through the learning guide carefully. It is divided into sections


which cover all the skills and knowledge you need to successfully
complete this module.
- Use the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your
own progress.
- When you have completed this module (or several modules) and
feel confident that you have had sufficient practice, your teacher

BASIC HAND AND ARM MASSAGE
1.3.1

What are the materials for this activity?

Lotion/ massage oil- a medium used to rub throughout the massage

Towel – used to wipe off excess lotion and oil.

Perform Hand Massage Techniques and Procedure


PROCEDURE
Step1.
Hold the client’s hand in your
hand. Place a dab of lotion on
the back of the client’s hand
and spread it to the fingers and
wrist
Step2.
Hold the client’s hand firmly.
Bend the hand slowly with a
forward and backward
movement limber the wrist.
Repeat three times

Step3.
Grasp each finger. Gently bend
each finger, one at a time, to
limber the top of the hand and
finger joints. As the fingers and
thumb are bent, slide your
thumb down toward the
fingertips

Step4.
With the client’s elbow resting
on the table, hold the hand
upright. Massage the palm of
the hands with the cushions of
your thumbs, using a circular
movement in alternate
directions. This movement will
completely relax the client’s
hand.
Step5.
Rest client’s arm on the table.
Grasp each finger at the base,
and rotate it gently in large
circles, ending with a gentle
squeeze of the fingertips.
Repeat three times.
Step6.
Hold the client’s hand. Massage
the wrist, then top of the hand
with a circular movement. Slide
back and with both hands wring
wrist in opposite direction three
times.
Step7.
Finish massage by tapering
each finger. Beginning at the
base of each finger, rotate,
pause, and squeeze with gentle
pressure. Then, pull lightly with
pressure until tip is reached.
Repeat three times

Step8.
Repeat steps 1-7 on the other hand.

Arm Massage Techniques and Procedure

PROCEDURE
Step1.
Complete hand massage.
Step2.
Palm turned downward on the
table. Massage the arm from
wrist to elbow, using a slow,
circular motion in alternate
directions. Repeat three times.
Palm upward and repeat the
same movements three times.
Step3.
Massage the underpart of the
arm to the elbow, using
fingers of each hand in
alternate crosswise directions.
Repeat three times

Step4.
Massage the top of the arm
from wrist to elbow. Apply
thumbs in opposite directions
with squeezing motion. Repeat
three times.

Step5.
Cup elbow joint in your hand.
Massage elbow with circular
motion. Repeat three times

Step6.
Stroke the arm firmly in
opposite directions, from the
elbow to wrist. Finally, stroke
each finger, ending with a
gentle squeeze of the
fingertips.

Step7.
Repeat steps 1-6 on the other arm

 As early as 300 Bc, the Chinese practice massage to cure


illness.
 Massaging the hands and arms can restore the healthy and
youthful condition.
 Gladiators and soldiers in ancient time were having a massage
before going to the battle field to give vigor and promote
fitness and health.
 There are four main groups of massage strokes. Namely:
Effleurage, Petrissage, Tapotement and Vibration.
