UNIT-I: LOGIC AND PROOFS
QUESTION BANK – I
PART-A
1. Define contrapositive of a statement.2.
2. State the truth value of “If tigers have wings then the earth travels round the sun”.
3. Write an equivalent formula for P ( Q R ) which contains neither the biconditional nor the
conditional.
4. Prove by truth tables ( P Q ) ( P Q ) ( P Q ) .
5. Give the converse and the contrapositive of the implication “If it is raining, then I get wet”.
6 . Use truth table verify that the proposition ( P Q ) → ( P Q ) is a contradiction.
PART-B
1. Construct truth table for ( P → ( Q R ) ) ( ( Q R ) ( P R ) ) .
2. Show that ( P ( Q R ) ) ( Q R ) ( P R ) R without using truth table.
3. Prove that P → Q , Q → R , P R R by using indirect method.
4. Show the premises R → Q, R S , S → Q, P → Q, P are inconsistent.
5. Show that S is valid inference from the premises P → Q, Q R, S → P and R .
6. Show that ( x ) ( P ( x ) Q ( x ) ) ( x ) P ( x ) ( x ) Q ( x ) by using indirect method.
7. Explain the two types of quantifiers and determine the truth value of each of the following
statements:
(1) x, x = − x
(2) x, x + 2 x
(3) x, x 4 = x
(4) x, x − 2 = x .
9. Prove that ( x ) M ( x ) follows logically from the premises ( x ) ( H ( x ) → M ( x ) ) and ( x ) H ( x )
.
10. Is the following argument valid?
(1) All lecturers are determined.
(2) Anyone who is determined and intelligent will give satisfactory service.
(3) Clare is an intelligent lecturer.
(4) Therefore Clare will give satisfactory service (use predicates).
11. Verify the validity of the inference. If one person is more successful than another, then he has
worked harder to deserve success. John has not worked harder than Peter. Therefore, John is not
successful than Peter.
12. Express the negations of the following statement using quantifiers and in statement form. “No
one has done every problem in the exercise”.
13. Obtain the PCNF and PDNF of the following P → (P (Q → P)) .
