We are looking for an experienced, dynamic and self-motivated Systems and Network
Administrator to join our Infrastructure team.

Vacancy: Graduate Trainee -Systems and Network Administrator

Reports to: System’s & Network Administrator

Based at: Kampala.

Job Summary:

The Systems and Network Administrator is responsible for managing and supporting of
the IT infrastructure, including the time and attendance system, hardware, software,
desktop and shared infrastructure, voice and data networks, servers, mobile and fixed
telephony.

They are also responsible for ensuring that all Infrastructure components are maintained
and work reliably to meet Smart needs. They will also enforce security policies to
protect the organization’s computer infrastructure, networks, and data and Level 2 IT
user support to both internal and external customers.

Key training objectives.

1. To support and monitor existing infrastructure, perform preventative


maintenance work, backup and perform other regular support activities to ensure
effectiveness and to provide cover on such tasks when required.
2. To plan, manage and implement infrastructure projects and upgrades to meet
Smart goals.
3. To ensure that all work and changes are performed in such a way as to minimize
all disruption to existing business use.
4. To respond to 2nd Line Help Desk calls and planned work requests.
5. To manage such items through to resolution or escalate them to another member
of the team or the Regional Infrastructure and Security Manager.
6. To liaise with external suppliers and support agencies for the ongoing support and
maintenance of relevant hardware and software.

7. To assist in keeping track of Smart IT infrastructure assets and ensure that the
infrastructure and data is always kept secure.
8. To assist in designing and documenting infrastructure processes, procedures, and
standards and to maintain or prepare system and software documentation as
directed.
9. To maintain appropriate records of time spent, actions taken and item status to
facilitate management, future problem resolution and to keep users informed of
progress.
10. To ensure that technology is used, managed, and supported in accordance with
Smart standards, policies, and procedures.

Qualifications:

1. Holder of a bachelor’s degree in IT or related field.


2. Fresh graduate with a passion for networks and system administration.

1. Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate
technical terminology to people with limited or no technical understanding.
2. Excellent customer service skills, always striving to improve services to meet
customer and business needs.
3. Proactive and solutions driven.
4. Ability and willingness to quickly learn.
5. Be able to liaise with all staff levels.
6. Ability to work to tight deadlines and budgetary limitations.
7. Customer, end-user and external support company liaison skills.
8. Self-managing and pro-active.

1. Delivery of tasks within agreed timelines with minimum supervision and follow-
up.
2. Positive feedback regarding support, system availability and up time.

1. Candidates selected to join the program will be assigned training targets (as
outlined in the training objectives section above) by their respective supervisors
based on which the first evaluation will be conducted after three months. This
will determine confirmation, extension, or elimination from the program.
2. The supervisor may recommend exceptional candidates who demonstrate
mastery of the training objectives within the three months for confirmation and
assigned project tasks on a full-time basis.
3. The rest will continue in the program for a further three months before a final
evaluation is done. The supervisors will outline specific development areas of
focus to ensure that the candidates are guided accordingly.
