1. A function f(x) is said to be continuous at a point c if.

2. A real function f is said to be continuous if it is continuous at every point in the domain of f.

3. If f and g are real-valued functions such that (f o g) is defined at c, then

(f g)(x) - f(g(x)).
If g is continuous at c and if f is continuous at g(c), then (f o g) is continuous at c.

(RHD),

5. If a function f is differentiable at every point in its domain, then

6. If LHD ≠ RHD, then the function f(x) is not differentiable at x = c.

7. Geometrical meaning of differentiability:

The function f(x) is differentiable at a point P if there exists a unique tangent at point P. In
other words, f(x) is differentiable at a point P if the curve does not have P as its corner point.

8. A function is said to be differentiable in an interval (a, b) if it is differentiable at every point

of (a, b).

9. A function is said to be differentiable in an interval [a, b] if it is differentiable at every point

11. Logarithm of a to the base b is x, i.e., logba = x if bx = a, where b > 1 is a real number.
Logarithm of a to base b is denoted by logba.

12. Functions of the form x = f(t) and y = g(t) are parametric functions.

13. Rolle’s Theorem: If f : [a, b] → R is continuous on [a, b] and differentiable on (a, b) such that
f(a) = f(b), then there exists some c in (a, b) such that f’(c) = 0.

14. Mean Value Theorem: If f : [a, b] → R is continuous on [a, b] and differentiable on (a, b),

then there exists some c in (a, b) such that

Top Concepts

1. A function is continuous at x = c if the function is defined at x = c and the value of the function

Very Short Answer:

1. Solution:

We have: y = log (cos ex)

= – ex tan ex

2. Solution:

Let y = cos {sin (x)2}.

𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑦
∴ = – sin {sin (x)2}. {sin (x)2}
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥

𝑑𝑦
= – sin {sin (x)2}. cos(x)2 (x2)
𝑑𝑥

= – sin {sin (x)2}. cos(x)22x

= -2x cos(x)2 sin {sin(x)2}.

3. Solution:

Let y = sin2(x2).
𝑑𝑦
∴ = 2 sin (x2) cos (x2) = sin (2x2).
𝑑𝑥

4. Solution:

We have: y + sin y = cos x.

Differentiating w.r,t. x, we get:

𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑦
+ cos y. = – sin x
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥

𝑑𝑦
(1 + cos y) = -sin x
𝑑𝑥

𝑑𝑦 sin 𝑥
Hence, =−
𝑑𝑥 1+cos 𝑦

where y ≠ (2n + 1)π, n ∈ Z.

5. Solution:

(24)
CONTINUITY & DIFFERENTIABILITY
05

Put 3x = sin θ.

y = sin-1 (2 sin θ cos θ)

= sin-1 (sin 2θ) = 2θ

= 2 sin-1 3x

6. Solution:

The given equation is x = elogx

This is not true for non-positive real numbers.

[ ∵ Domain of log function is R+]

Now, let y = elogx

If y > 0, taking logs.,

log y = log (elogx) = log x.log e

= log x . 1 = log x

⇒ y = x.

Hence, x = elogx is true only for positive values of x.

7. Solution:

Let y = 3x + 2.
𝑑𝑦 𝑑
= 3x + 2.log3. (x + 2)
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥

= 3x + 2 .log3.(1 + 0)

= 3x + 2. log 3 = log 3 (3x + 2).

8. Solution:

Let y = log (1 + θ) and u = sin-1θ.

(25)
CONTINUITY & DIFFERENTIABILITY
05

9. Solution:

Here y = xx …(1)

Taking logs., log y = log xx

⇒ log y = x log x.

Differentiating w.r.t. x, we get:

1 𝑑𝑦
⋅ = x 1x + logx. (1)
𝑦 𝑑𝑥

= 1 + log x.
𝑑𝑦
Hence, = y (1 + log x) dx
𝑑𝑥

= xx (1 + log x). [Using (1)]

10. S
olution:

The given series can be written as:

Squaring, y2 = 2x + y

⇒ y2 – y = 2x.
𝑑𝑦
Diff. w.r.t. x, (2y -1) = 2x log 2.
𝑑𝑥

Short Answer:

(26)
CONTINUITY & DIFFERENTIABILITY
05

1. Solution:

Hence ‘f’ is continuous at x = 0.

2. Solution:

We have : f(x) = x + 1 …(1)

∴ fof(x) = f (f(x)) =f(x)+ 1

= (x + 1) + 1 = x + 2.
𝑑 𝑑
∴ (fof)(x).) = (x + 2) = 1 + 0 = 1.
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥

3. Solution:

4. Solution:

5. Solution:

The given differential equation is:

(tan-1 y – x) dy = (1 + y2) dx

6. Solution:

(28)

7. Solution:

8. Solution:

(29)
CONTINUITY & DIFFERENTIABILITY
05

Long Answer:
1. Solution:

(30)
CONTINUITY & DIFFERENTIABILITY
05

Also f(0) = a sin π/2 (0+1)

= a sin π/2 = a(1) = a

For continuity,

⇒ a = 1/2 = a

Hence, a = ½

2. Solution:

(31)
CONTINUITY & DIFFERENTIABILITY
05

(32)
CONTINUITY & DIFFERENTIABILITY
05

Hence p = 1/2 and q = 4

3. Solution:

⇒ k = -1 = -1

(33)
CONTINUITY & DIFFERENTIABILITY
05

Hence k = -1

4. Solution:

limx→1 - f(x) = limx→1 − (3ax +b)

= limh→0 (3a (1-h) + b]

= 3a(1 – 0) + b

= 3a + b

limx→1 + f(x) = limx→1 + (5ax − 2b)

= limh→0 [5a (1+h) – 2b]

= 5a (1+0) – 2b

= 5a – 2b

Also f(1) = 11

Since ‘f’ is continuous at x = 1,

∴ limx→1 − f(x) = limx→1 + f(x) = f(1)

⇒ 3a + b = 5a – 2b = 11.

From first and third,

3a + b = 11 …………… (1)

From last two,

5a – 2b = 11 …………… (2)

Multiplying (1) by 2,

6a + 2b = 22 ………….. (3)

Adding (2) and (3),

11a = 33

⇒ a = 3.

Putting in (1),

3(3) + b = 11

(34)
CONTINUITY & DIFFERENTIABILITY
05

⇒ b = 11 – 9 = 2.

Hence, a = 3 and b = 2.
