regenerative converter CFW-11 RB. This manual must be used together with the user’s manual of the CFW-11 RB.
The text provides additional information so as to make the use and programming of the CFW-11 RB easier, in
certain applications.
Normal Overload Duty (ND): the so-called Normal Duty (ND); converter operation duty that sets the
value of maximum current for continuous duty Inom-ND and overload of 110 % per minute. It is selected by
programming P0298 (Application) = 0 (Normal Duty (ND)).
The duty of the inverter overload reflects on the regenerative converter.
Imom-ND: rated current of the regenerative converter for use with normal overload duty (ND = Normal Duty).
Overload: 1.1 x Inom-ND / 1 minute.
Heavy Overload Duty (HD): the so-called Heavy Use or from English: “Heavy Duty” (HD); converter operation
duty that sets the value of maximum current for continuous duty Inom-HD and overload of 150 % per minute. It is
selected by programming P0298 (Application) = 1 (Heavy Duty (HD)).
The duty of the inverter overload reflects on the regenerative converter.
I nom-HD: rated current of the regenerative converter for use with heavy overload duty (HD= Heavy Duty).
Overload: 1.5 x Inom-HD / 1 minute.
Regenerative Converter: three-phase switched converter of “boost type” (amplifier) that converts the alternating
current (AC) of the line in DC voltage (DC Bus). It is able to absorb energy from the line (AC) or return energy
to it, being used as DC voltage source that feeds one or more output inverters.
Output Converter: frequency inverter with power circuit supplied by the DC Link that comes from the regenerative
converter. It in charge of the control of the motor.
Pre-Charge Circuit: it loads the capacitors of the DC link with limited current, sending greater current peaks
at the energizing of the converter.
DC Link: intermediate circuit of the regenerative converter; voltage in direct current obtained by rectifying the
alternate power supply voltage or through an external source; it supplies the output inverter bridge.
U, V and W Arm: set of two IGBTs of the input phases R, S, T of the regenerative converter.
IGBT: “Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor”; it is a basic component of the U, V and W arms. It operates like an
electronic key in the saturated (closed switch) and cut (open switch).

Identification of the Regenerative Converter Model and Accessories
Description:
This parameter presents the converter rated current for the normal overload duty (ND) and for the heavy overload
duty (HD). The converter operating mode, if it is HD or ND, is defined by the content of P0298.
Description:
Adjustment according to the power supply voltage of the regenerative converter.
The allowed adjustable range depends on the model of the regenerative converter as described in the Table 6.7 on
page 6-7, which also presents the factory default value.
NOTE!
When adjusted via the keypad (HMI), this parameter may change automatically the parameter P0151.

Identification of the Regenerative Converter Model and Accessories
Description:
Refer to the allowed current data for switching frequency, different from the default in the tables available in chapter
8 of the CFW11 RB and CFW-11M RB user’s manual.
The converter switching frequency may be adjusted according to the needs of the application. Higher switching
frequency imply in lower acoustic noise in the filter, however, the selection of the switching frequency results in a
compromise between the filter acoustic noise, the losses in the converter IGBTs and the maximum allowed currents.
The reduction of the switching frequency reduces the leakage current to the ground, preventing the actuation of the
faults F074 (Ground Fault) or F070 (Input overcurrent or short circuit).
P0298 – Application
Description:
Set the content of this parameter according to the application.
The normal overload duty (ND) defines the maximum current for continuous operation (Inom-ND) and the overload
of 110 % during 1 minute.
The heavy overload duty (HD) defines the maximum current for continuous operation (Inom-ND ) and the overload
of 150 % during 1 minute.
6
In both cases, it is necessary to use the same drive output converter duty.
The currents Inom-ND and Inom-HD are presented in P0295. For more details regarding these operation Duties, refer to
chapter 8 of the CFW11 RB and CFW-11M RB user’s manual.

The CFW-11 RB BACKUP functions allow saving the converter current parameter contents in a specific memory,
or vice-versa (overwrite the current parameters with the memory content). Besides, there is a function exclusive
for software update, by means of the FLASH Memory Module.
Description:
It allows saving the converter current parameters in an area of the EEPROM memory of the control module or the
opposite, loading the parameters with the content of this area. It also allows resetting the Enabled Time (P0043),
kVAh (P0044) and Fan Enabled Time (P0045) counters. The Table 7.1 on page 7-1 describes the actions perfor-
med by each option.

Description:
This function allows saving the contents of the converter writing parameters in the FLASH Memory Module (MMF),
or vice-versa, and can be used to transfer the contents of the parameters from one converter to another.
After storing the parameters of the converter in a FLASH Memory Module, it is possible to pass them to another
converter through this function. However, if the converters are from different models or with incompatible software
versions, the keypad (HMI) will exhibit the message: “FLASH Memory Module with invalid parameters” and will not
allow the copy.
NOTE!
During the converter operation, the modified parameters are saved in the FLASH Memory Module,
regardless of a user’s command. This ensures that the MMF will always have an updated copy of
the converter parameters, if P0318 = 1.
NOTE!
When the converter is powered and the memory module is present, the current parameter contents
is compared with the contents of the parameters saved in the MMF and, in case they are different,
the keypad (HMI) will exhibit the message “FLASH Memory Module with different parameters”,
after 3 seconds the message is replaced by P0318 parameter menu. The user has the option of
overwriting the contents of the memory module (choosing P0318 = 1) or overwriting the converter
parameters (choosing P0318 = 2), or even ignoring the message by programming P0318 = 0.

Settings
Description:
The Copy function HMI is similar to the previous function, and is also used to transfer the contents of the parameters
from one converter to another (others). The converters must have the same software version. If the versions are
different, by programming P0319 = 2, the HMI will show the message: “Incompatible software version”. The
content of P0319 returns to zero after removing the message from the HMI.
NOTE!
In case the keypad (HMI) had been previously loaded with the parameters from a version “different”
from that of the converter where it is trying to copy the parameters, the operation will not be carried
out and the keypad (HMI) will indicate the fault F082 (Copy Function Fault). It is understood as
“different”, version those ones which are different in “x” or “y”, assuming that the software version
numbers be described as Vx.yz.
In order to copy the parameters from one converter to another, one must proceed in the following manner:
1. Connect the keypad (HMI) to the converter from which one wishes to copy the parameters (Converter A).
2. Set P0319 = 1 (Conversation → HMI) to transfer the parameter of the Conversation A to HMI.
3. Press the key right soft key “Save”. P0319 returns automatically to 0 (Inactive) as soon as the transfer is
finished.
7
5. Connect the same keypad (HMI) to the converter to which one wants to transfer the parameters (Converter B).
6. Set P0319 = 2 (HMI → Converter) to transfer the content of the keypad (HMI) nonvolatile memory (EEPROM
with the Converter A parameters) to the Converter B.
7. Press the key right soft key “Save”. When P0319 returns to 0 the transfer of the parameters has been finished.
From that moment on the Converters A and B will have parameters with the same content.

Used Control
8 USED CONTROL
The regenerative converter (RB) connects to the line trough the input filter. In order to control the power flow
through it and make the line “notice” the installation as a resistive load, it is necessary an appropriate control
in the converter.
The control used in the converter is the vector type oriented by the line to which it is connected.
In this chapter the vector control and its related parameters will be described.
In this control the components are obtained from the apparent current Is (P0003):
Active Current Id: current oriented with the line voltage vector.
Since these currents are represented by vectors that rotate at the synchronous speed (line), when observed from
a referential in the same synchronous speed (referential transformation), these vectors are represented by their
amplitudes (continuous values over time). Controlling their amplitudes it is possible to control the power flow
through the converter, which simplifies the control.
The active current is related to the real power in the converter, i.e., the power is effectively converted into work.
As the regenerative converter operates in four quadrants, this current can be positive (converter consuming
energy from the line) or negative (converter regenerating energy to the line).
Since the reactive current is related to the reactive power, it is exchanged periodically between the line and the
regenerative converter. If it is positive, the converter presents characteristics of capacitive load to the line. The
current leads in relation to the line voltage. If this current is negative, the converter presents characteristics of
inductive load, the current lags behind the line voltage.
The Figure 8.1 on page 8-7 shows the control block diagram. The line voltages and the currents will be used
for the vector orientation. Since the control is oriented to the line, it is necessary to obtain the amplitude values
of the line voltages in time in order to have the position of the voltage vector in time.
This group shows the parameters related to the DC Link control of the converter. From the measured voltage
on the DC Link, the control sets the real power flow through the converter.

Description:

the DC Link value when the converter is disabled until the value set in P0151 (DC Link voltage setpoint) when the

93 DC Link Regulator
Description:
It defines the DC Link Voltage when the converter is operating. In order to get a good flow regulation in the converter
power, this value is adjusted to 15 % above the peak value of the line voltage of the line programmed in P0296.
The formula for this calculus is presented in the following equation.
8-2 | CFW-11 RB
Used Control
Description:
The DC Link regulator gains are defined with the factory setting. However, these gains can be set to improve the
response of DC Link regulator.
Values for high gains must be avoided, because a very fast transient response of the DC Link control can lead to
distortions in the wave form of the converter current causing loss of power factor.
If during a fast acceleration/braking of the motor, in the output drive, there is a DC Link undervoltage/overvoltage
fault, the gains can be increased to avoid this condition. In case of a gain setting, it is recommended to start with
the setting of the proportional gain (P0161) and repeat the test. If this setting is not sufficient, proceed with the
integral gain setting (P0162).
The setting parameters of the current regulator are presented in this group. These gains will be responsible for
a good dynamic setting of the current and its harmonics distortion.
Description:
These gains present a factory setting. These values should allow proper operation of the converter for all the
available powers.
The increase in the proportional gain (P0167) and reduction in the integral gain (P0168) tends to decrease the
distortion of the current. However, if the load has fast transients (braking/acceleration), the gain setting, made to
8
improve the wave form of the current, must be verified. It may cause the converter operating fault during transients.

Used Control
NOTE!
Do not modify the content of these parameters. For more information, refer to WEG.
In this group you can set the control of the reactive injection and cause the converter to simulate the line, a
load with inductive characteristics.
Description:
Setting this parameter will cause the converter to process the inductive reactive current, simulating an inductive load.
NOTE!
The total current of the converter is the sum of the active and reactive currents, so when the value
of this parameter is different from zero, the active current that the converter can process will be
proportionally lower.
(*) Depending on the HD current of the converter, where the maximum value is limited in 2 x P0295 (HD).
8-4 | CFW-11 RB
Used Control
Description:
With the increase of the line voltage amplitude, it becomes more difficult for the converter to control the power flow
until the point it does not occur anymore, causing a converter fault. One way of ensuring that the converter will keep
controlling the power flow in this condition is to generate the inductive reactive current needed.
The generation point of the reactive current is defined by the parameter P0180. The value of this parameter is pro-
portional to the line voltage according to the equation described below.
Rated load.
P0180 = 95 %.
In this condition the converter is able to put an effective line voltage of 437 V in its output. This voltage will be
sufficient to maintain the power flux (the power flux is controlled by the difference between the line voltage and the
output voltage of the converter, which in this case is 57 V).
In case the line increases to 410 V, the DC Link voltage will not be changed (618 V), because the DC Link controller
will maintain the value set in P0151. Thus, the maximum voltage that can be taken at the VSD output will continue in
437 V. In this new configuration the maximum possible voltage difference between the line and the output voltage of
the converter drops to 27 V, which is not sufficient to maintain the same power flux for the load condition, causing the
appearing of the alarm A105 on the HMI.
When the converter output voltage is 95 % of the maximum allowed (415 V), the converter will start to inject reactive
in the system, maintaining its stability.
NOTE!
The P0180 standard value avoids the injection of reactive current in normal operating conditions.
A value close to 100 % will cause loss of performance during transient loading. A very low value
in P0180 will cause unnecessary injection of reactive current and thus, decrease the total active 8
current that the converter can operate.
The value of P0179 is the maximum reactive current that the converter will be able to inject in
relation to HD.
CFW-11 RB | 8-5
Used Control
Description:
The converter power flux is oriented at the convention generator-receiver (Positive Power = consuming energy from
the line. Negative power = regenerating energy to the line). Thus the parameter P0169 defines which the maximum
active current towards converter → line will be (current lagged in 180º of the line voltage). Its value is proportional
to the ND current of the converter.
The parameter P0170 defines which the maximum active current towards line → converter will be (current in phase
with the line voltage). Its value is proportional to the ND current of the converter.

8.7 START-UP
NOTE!
Read all the CFW-11RB user’s manual before installing, powering up or operating the converter.
a. Install the converter: according to Chapter 3 Installation and Connection of the CFW-11RB user’s
manual, making all the power and control connections.
b. Prepare the drive and power up the converter: according to the item 5 of the CFW-11RB user’s manual.
c. Set the password P0005 = 5: according to the Section 5.3 ADJUSTMENT OF THE PASSWORD IN P0000
on page 5-2 of this manual.
d. Set the inverter to operate with the application line: through the Menu “Oriented Star-up” access
P0317 and change its content to 1, in order to initiate the Oriented Start-up sequence.
The Oriented Start-up routine presents the main parameters in a logical sequence on the HMI.
The setting of these parameters prepares the converter for an operation with the application line. Look at the
sequence step by step in the Figure 8.2 on page 8-9.
The setting of these parameters presented in this operating mode causes the automatic modification of the
content of other parameters and/or internal variables of the converter, as show in Figure 8.2 on page 8-9.
Thus it is obtained a stable operation of the control circuit with suitable values for best performance.
During the Oriented Start-up routine the “Config” (Configuration) status will be indicated on the top left part
of the HMI display.

Faults and Alarms
The troubleshooting structure of the converter is based on the fault and alarm indication.
In a fault event, the IGBTs will be blocked and the DC Link Voltage will drop to the voltage level defined by:
1.35 x P0002 (V).
The alarm works as a warning to the user about critical operating conditions and that a fault may occur if the
situation does not change.
Refer to the chapter 6 of the CFW-11 RB user’s manual to obtain more information regarding Faults and Alarms.
The parameters regarding the motor and the converter protections are in this group.

They are useful to monitor the temperature on the main converter sections in case of an occasional converter
overheating.

Faults and Alarms
When a fault occurs, the converter may reset itself automatically after the time set in P0340 has elapsed.
NOTE!
The faults F051, F054, F057, F301, F304, F307, F310, F313, F316, F319, F322, F325,
F328, F331, F334, F337, F340 and F343 allow a conditional Reset, i.e., the Reset will only
occur if the temperature returns to the normal operating range.
If after performing the auto-reset, the same fault is repeated for three times consecutively, the auto-reset function will
be disabled. A fault is considered consecutive if it happens again within 30 seconds after the auto-reset is performed.
Therefore, if a fault occurs four times consecutively, the converter will remain disabled (general disable) and the fault
will continue being indicated.
