2.2.1 D: QUALITY OF CLASSROOM TEACHING

Teaching Learning Methods

Pedagogical Initiatives:
The Teaching and Learning methods are very much essential for the Civil Engineering students to
visualize most of their core concepts like Engineering Surveying, Structural Analysis, Geotechnical
Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Construction management &
Environmental Engineering, The importance of these subjects can be easily understood by looking at
any of the question papers of competitive exam like GATE. Many students will find it difficult to
understand the concepts of this subject because of the nature of the subject. It requires the students to
visualize the each and every topic in three dimensional. The students also find it difficult to do
calculations involved in the subject since most of the quantities are Scalar. Hence to create interest
among students and to make the subject comfortable for them to learn, various innovative practices
were adopted in the teaching-learning process.

Civil Engineering requires continuous learning to be updated in the particular profession and the
pedagogies play an important role in development of the content. Faculty members use various
pedagogical methods for effective teaching learning process as given below:

 Chalk and White board

 Power point presentation
 Interactive learning
 Web Resources
 Seminars/Workshops/Conferences/
 Case Study
 Quiz
 Tutorials
 Project based learning
 MOOCs Courses -Swayam NPTEL, Coursera etc
 Flipped Learning
 Industrial visits
 Experimental Learning
 Learning Management System (Moodle)
 Technical Training Programmes through Training & Placement Cell (T&P)
 Collaborative learning

Implementation

The implementation of teaching-learning mechanism is carried out based on the following

different activities. Some of the pedagogical implementation methods are given below
Chalk and White board:

It is an efficient and traditional method for delivering substantial amount of information and
imparting knowledge to a large number of students. It provides a summary or synthesis of
information from various sources. The faculty member ensures to kindle the student for
exploring much more on the topic that is delivered with substantial amount of information.

The faculty member ensures that at least a small group of students among the batch are attracted
towards the topic summarized and henceforth kindled towards the other modes of teaching aids.
Faculty member explains the concepts, principles solutions to problems and applications of
respective subject. Lectures create an interest in the subject among the students and kindle their
creativity for application in the field.

Power point presentation:

This has become a standard norm in the teaching-learning process. Power point presentations
are very effective in Communication Skill Development, Improving verbal skills for effective
public speaking and Sharing of Knowledge by communicating in regular interactions.

The students and faculty members are engaged in an effective teaching and learning process
through the use of digital learning platforms. Teaching using this technique makes teaching and
learning interesting for students. They get involved in lessons so that they can answer the quizes
at the end.

Seminar:

To enhance the teaching / technical delivery skills among individual students’ seminar sessions
are arranged. The choice of the seminar topic is done in such a manner that certain topics post-
lecture requires a marginal change for the consecutive concepts.
Seminars are designed for students to talk about topics in the particular course or lectures in
detail. Seminars are a vital part of most academic courses and they give opportunity to students
to discuss the topics in depth with other students, and with the faculty member.
The debate and argument with other students is very useful in developing their grasping and
understanding ability of the subject.
Benefits associated with seminars include opportunities to:
 Learn novel approaches and ideas from peers
 Clarify the complex concepts.

Quiz:

Periodical and quick assessment of the student’s understanding the concepts is carried out by
conducting quiz program. The quiz is either an online one or the traditional paper mode. The
scores are recorded for assessing the student’s understating of the concepts.
Collaborative learning:

It involves encouraging student collaboration for various projects. We live in a globalized world
and collaboration is an essential life skill that is important for all careers and enterprises.
Teachers can help foster this skill in the classroom by allowing students to learn, study andwork
in groups.

 Students acquire knowledge on various skills such as technical skills, communication

skills, etc by organizing and participating in professional activities.
 Students also learn new technology during their project implementation.

Industrial Visit:
Industrial visits represent one of the important attribute in any engineering undergraduate
program that contribute to the achievement of various essential learning outcomes and program
outcomes. It provides the students an opportunity to learn practically through interaction, and
by seeing the working methods and employment practices.
National Program Of Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL)

NPTEL provides E-learning through online web and video courses in engineering, science and
Humanities streams. The mission of NPTEL is to enhance the quality of Engineering Education
in the country by providing free online courseware. http://nptel.iitm.ac.in/
SWAYAM is an instrument for self-actualization process. It provides opportunities for a life-
long learning. A learner can choose from hundreds of courses. Every course that is taught at the
university / college / school level is in virtual medium. The courses are taught by best teachers
in India and elsewhere. A student studying in any college can transfer the credits earned by
taking these courses into their academic record. https://swayam.gov.in/
COURSERA

COURSERA is a world-wide online learning platform. It provides opportunities for a life-long

learning. Coursera works with universities and other organizations to offer online courses,
specializations, and degrees in a variety of subjects, such as engineering, data science, machine
learning, mathematics, business, computerscience, digitalmarketing, humanities, medicine, biol
ogy, social sciences, and others. https://www.coursera.org/
Tutorial:

Tutorial classes are conducted to train the students in analytical subjects. The total strength of
students is divided into two equal halves and two tutorial classes are handled by two faculty
members, so that special concentration would be given to the weak students. Tutorial classes
help the students to improve their analytical and problem-solving skills. Implementation of
tutorial classes helps the students to clear analytical papers in semester end examination.
Technical Training:

To visualize student’s idea of project in a creative and interesting way so that it would help
them to promote their product in an effective way in future. Also will help them to explore
different directions of the project they are working on.Technical training enhances the students
to get in-depth knowledge about their subject. Technical training refreshes the basics which will
be helpful for placement activities. Specially designed training (soft skills, communication
skills) is given to students. Such activities facilitate the students to win in job recruitment
/placement.
Online classes:

During COVID-19 pandemic, the class work is conducted through online in various platforms such as
Microsoft Teams/Zoom and which were very effectively used for every course of the program. The
faculty can upload course plans, e-Books, course materials, video lectures, question banks etc. in this
platform. The online assessment tests are conducted through Microsoft teams.

Experimental learning:

 T
o
improve the quality of learning, curriculum of laboratory courses is developed in such a manner
to emphasize the concepts learned in theoretical subjects.
 In each semester, two or three laboratory courses are conducted and most of these courses are
related to theoretical subjects.
 Both hardware and software based laboratories are equipped with necessary infrastructure to
facilitate effective conduction of the experiments in the laboratory.
 Faculty members are assigned for each practical session to assist the students in conducting
experiments.
 For the laboratory sessions, detailed instruction manuals are provided for each laboratory
course.
 Students are also advised to study the theory and the procedure to conduct the experiment
before the laboratory session.
 Students conduct the experiments and record the observations in the observation book. After
completion of the experiment, students are encouraged to discuss about obtained results from
the experiment.
 The observations are verified by faculty and record books are evaluated.
 As part of testing the learning process, viva-voce is conducted in each laboratory session.
Project based learning:

 The main project work and mini project is carried out by students in VIII & V Semesters
respectively.
 Students in each section are divided into batches consisting of 3-5 students.
 Each batch selects their guide according to the research area of the faculty members.
 Problem identification is done based on the existing solutions collected from literature survey
and also identifies the constraints to the problems.
Learning Management System (Moodle):

The college encourages teaching & learning through LMS tool, such as Moodle. Each Department has a
Moodle coordinator, who maps the students, courses and faculty at the beginning of the semester in
Moodle. Lesson plan, syllabus, assignments, lab manuals and extra material are shared with the
students through Moodle. Quiz is conducted through Moodle. Intranet http://192.168.158.162:8008

Technical Training Programmes through Training & Placement Cell:

 Technical training refreshes the basics which will be helpful for placement activities
 Specially designed training (soft skills, communication skills) is given to students regularly by
the Training & Placement cell
 Such activities facilitate the students to win in job recruitment /placement.
Flipped Learning:

It involves encouraging student for presentation of different concepts from the syllabus as a part of
revision. Flipping the classroom is an effective teaching method. In this technique, the students are
made active participants of the learning process by passing the bonus of learning on them, it requires
the teachers to relegate to the role of students. Teaching using this technique, responsibility is on the
group of students are the educators play to the role of guides, mentors, supervisors for the students.
