Report (produced using MS word) that includes all calculations, figures, discussion and conclusions.

This is a strictly individual assignment and no collaboration amongst students is allowed.

Be organized and neat. Make sure to answer all prompts. Highlight the final answers. Include all the
relevant information, calculations, diagrams, photos, etc…. You may use a software package (Excel,
etc…) only where it is indicated that the use of such tools is allowed, otherwise you must use
analytical solutions as learned in class.

Submit a hardcopy (double-sided print) by the indicated deadline along with the signed student
declaration form.

No Late submissions will be accepted.

Please make sure to sign the student deceleration at the end of this report.

including vector operations.

Assignment Brief and Guidance

 Objectives
1- Understand the effect of gravity.
2- Measure the acceleration of gravity.
3- Apply kinematic equations with constant acceleration.
4- Understand the graphical representation of motion.
5- Extract experimental values from different sensors and compare to theoretical values.
6- Find the sources of error and calculate the percentage error.
7- Provide suggestions to improve your results.

 Background Information
The theoretical part of this project has been covered in your functional physics class (Chapter 2),
particularly the kinematic equations with constant acceleration and freely falling object.

Project: Freely Falling Object

 Apparatus
1. PocketLab Voyager 2 sensor.
2. Length measuring tool.

 Connecting PocketLab Voyager 2 and Procedure

1. Go to the pocketlab website and log in.

2. Click "Connect a PocketLab"
3. In the Bluetooth connection window select "PL Voyager 2"
4. You should now see acceleration data streaming in real-time.
5. Have Voyager 2 at certain height such 100 cm and try to keep it at rest as possible as you
can.
6. Click Record to begin recording a trial.
7. Leave the Voyager 2 to fall freely from rest at height h = 180 cm.
8. Once the Voyager 2 hits the ground, click Stop and then Save to save.

3

 Trial: Free Fall from distance 100 cm

 Data Analysis
Using the acceleration vs. time graph:

1. In the a-t graph, highlight the region that represents the gravitational acceleration. (it
should be the region where the acceleration remains constant).

4

2. Use the data analysis to find out the mean of the highlighted values. Such mean value
represents the measured value of the gravitational acceleration. = 9.4 m/s2
3. Compare the measured value of the gravitational acceleration you obtained in Q2 with
the standard value (g=9.81m/s2)

9.81 – 9.4 = 0.41m/s2

4. Find the percentage error in your result. What error sources do you expect to have the
greatest impact on your result?

5. From the a-t graph find out the time required for the Voyager 2 to reach the ground
(flight time).

T= 4.75-4.2=0.55s

6. Use the relevant kinematic equation with the measured values of the gravitational
acceleration and the flight time to calculate the height above the ground from which
Voyager 2 is released to fall.

Xf =0.5*9.4*(0.55)2
= 1.42 m

7. Compare the calculated height you obtained in Q6 with the measured height and
analyze the discrepancies or agreement between these two values.

 Conclusion
Write a conclusion paragraph about your observation of freely falling object as motion in 1D with
constant acceleration. Explain the source of errors and how you can improve the results.
