Chapter 11 The Team Concept
One of BMW's senior executives said " The reason for BMW became a huge success worldwide
automobile company because of their commitment for teamwork."
As the senior leader in the Team of the design process of BMW, to motivate and enhance the
effectiveness of the design team, he always recruits and chooses the member to have high teamwork
skills and a creative mind. As the leader, he always legitimized the work, clear explanation of the broad
picture of the new design, set up the goals and tasks for each group to implement (Buy-in). Moreover,
he acknowledges that each mind will have a different perspective and creative ideas, so he builds the
freedom-culture for his team to share, learn from each other. So the performance is improved and the
skills of each persona will develop through-sharing and learning from each other (Learning). Because of
the limit of resources and time, therefore, as the leader of the team, he needs to wisely allocate the
human and physical resources, systemizes how the work of the team, and using the resources effectively
(Infrastructure).
As his experiences in the past, BMW understands the power of working together. Because of their
teamwork from all departments of BMW. Since building a car is a very difficult job, it requires several
departments to work together in order to complete the order, everything should be done at the same
time as the whole system, so from manufacturing to promotion to sale. Therefore, he needs to interact
and work together to achieve success not only on the team but also across organizational units
(Partnering). Without any of these departments, a complete sale will be impossible. Therefore,
partnership skill is one of the essential skills for each team members to adapt to the BMW culture.
Finally, when individual and team get the result with high performance, as the leader, he needs to
established and managed the rewarded policy so it will motivate the team to move foward with full of
motivation. BMW offers many benefits for their each of top employees such as raise in salary, bonus,
and stock options. To recognize the best contribution of the team, reward the team is the most direct
way for their outstanding effort (Accountability). The highest level of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
