Slider graphics have become a widely used trend in web design. They come in all shapes and sizes, and
are only limited by your imagination in how they look and perform. Creating these sliders in Photoshop is
extremely easy to do. In this short tutorial I will run through my process for creating a slider graphic using
layer styles.

First create a new PS document that size appropriately so that it will contain your slider box plus room to
add a shadow around the boarder. Use the Rectangular Marque Tool to draw a box, in a new layer, and fill
it with a neutral gray.

Double click the layer containing the box to open the Layer Styles window. Let’s start by adding a white
stroke with a size of 3 pixels

Next, let’s add a Gradient Overlay using the settings below. I chose these two shades of blue: Light blue –
#34f2f9, Dark blue – #0ba0d1

Now let’s set an Inner Glow with the setting below. I chose a darker blue for the effect. #1178ae

For our last layer effect, let’s create an Outer Glow to act as a slight shadow around the box. Use the
settings below to create the shadow.

You slider box should now look something like this.

Now let’s add a shadow below the slider box by creating a new layer below the layer containing the box.
Command+Click the thumbnail for the box to select it, then make sure your new layer is selected and fill
the selection with black. You won’t be able to see the new black box since it is behind our slider box.

Next choose Edit | Transform | Distort, and edit the black box to a shape similar to the one below. Press
Enter to transform the box.

I added arrows using <> in a font called Technical Forest.

To finish up, I’m going to add some type to the slider. I chose a font called Ballpark Weiner. It’s a great
vintage style font that you need, if you don’t have it all ready.

I applied the following effects to the font.

Color: #525353

Inner Shadow
Opacity: 75%
Angle: 90
Distance: 3
Choke: 0
Size: 7

Outer Glow
Blend Mode: Overlay
Opacity: 100%
Technique: Precise
Spread: 0
Size 2

I guess this wouldn’t really be a WeGraphics tutorial if we didn’t go one more step, and apply a little
grunge. I chose texture #1 from the Subtle Grunge Textures Vol. 2 pack. I scaled it down and placed it in a

layer above my slider box layer. I set the Blend Mode to Overlay and the Opacity to 50% to achieve the
final result.

This was a very simple tutorial to achieve a very nice and clean result. These techniques can be used to
create a variety of web elements beyond just slider boxes. I hope you’ve learned something new and have
chosen to use this new found knowledge for the powers of good! ;-)

Create a Fantastic Abstract Fan Poster
Posted by Constantin Potorac in Photoshop Tutorials on January 25th, 2010

In this tutorial, we are going to get creative with layering, lighting, and texture to build fantastic abstract piece. More
specifically, we’re going to employ some unusual techniques to make a fan poster for the band Omega Code, but
you’ll quickly see many different applications for what is taught here.

Before starting, it’s we must download and thank Moonchilde-Stock and SXC for their wonderful stock images.

Step 2 – Creating the background

Create a new layer group called "Background". In this new group you will create the main elements that define the
background. Start by creating a new blank layer. Make sure the Foreground color is black and Background color
is white. Render some clouds by going to Filter > Render > Clouds.

Step 6
Use the Polygonal Lasso Tool (L) set to 100% Feather and select several parts of the cloud render to delete
(Remember: after making a selection, hold shift and create a new selection to add to the previous selection. Learn More
About the Selection Tools). Delete this selection (Delete or Control+X). You may decide to feather this selection prior
to deleting once more to make a softer deletion.

Step 10
In this step you will use a Nebula stock image. There are many to choose from, but I have chosen the wonderful stock
image created by Moonchilde-Stock. Erase the edges of the image with a soft brush, and set the image to Linear
Dodge and 80% Opacity.

Step 11 – Color Adjustments

You are finished with the Background Group.

Next you will create another Group called Adjustments. Inside this group create a new layer and using the Soft Brush
(B) you need to add a spot of pink color #ff00f0, into a new layer a red color #fe3c00 and into another new layer an
orange one #ff6c00. Each color should be in it’s own layer for easy adjustments.

Set each layer as follows: pink Linear Dodge and Opacity 21%, red Linear Dodge and Opacity 5%, orange Linear Dodge
and Opacity 21%.

This is one of those steps that requires the best judgement of the designer. For this particular setup, these values made
sense, but do as you see fit obviously.

Step 14
Repeat Step 12 but this time apply this color #001eff and for the layer stile again use Color and Opacity 16%. Also
above all the layers and groups add the texture provided by SXC and set the layer to Overlay. Please note that this
same effect could definitely be achieved by other means such as a levels adjustment layer if you’re comfortable using
them.

Step 15 – Creating the Symbol

You are finished with the Adjustments Group. This next part of the tutorial focuses on the Omega Code symbol (but
you’re free to create your own logo/symbol if you’d like). Create a New Group between the Adjustments and
Background groups and name it Omega, this group will hold all the details and the Omega Symbol.

Create a new layer. Press Command + A (Ctrl + A in Windows) to select everything and press Command + Shift +
C (Ctrl + Shift + C in Windows) to copy merged and then press Command + V (Ctrl + V in Windows) to paste into
a new selection. Place the new layer inside the Omega group if it’s not already there..

Create a triangle shape and place it in the middle of the composition. You will use this shape just for reference.

Step 16
Make a selection around the black triangle (Ctrl + Click Layer in Layers Palette). For the moment, hide the triangle
shape layer. Select the layer you have created in Step 15 (the merged copy of all other layers) and with the selection
simply cut out a piece out of the merged layer.

Create a Fantastic Abstract Fan Poster | Tutorial9 http://www.tutorial9.net/tutorials/photoshop-tutorials/create-a-fantastic...

Step 18
Now you will have to create 4 more Triangles but these Triangles will have some cuts inside of them. To create the
triangles you need to duplicate the triangle layer you have created back in Step 16, apply a black and white
adjustment (Command + Shift + Option + B or Ctrl+ Shift + Alt + B on Windows) then use the Levels
Adjustments to make it lighter (0 – 1.00 – 176).

Create a Fantastic Abstract Fan Poster | Tutorial9 http://www.tutorial9.net/tutorials/photoshop-tutorials/create-a-fantastic...

Step 19
Create a smaller black triangle. Duplicate this triangle, and transform it so that there is an even smaller triangle within
it (Note: Hold Alt + Shift while transforming to transform in proportion, and from the center). This triangle should occupy
roughly 1/4th the area of the large triangle we applied the Black and White adjustment to in the previous step.

Step 24
Now use the Polygonal Lasso Tool and make a selection like below. Create a new layer and in this layer apply a Soft
White gradient set to White/Transparent (a soft, large white brush may work just as well). Set the layer to overlay and
Opacity 70%. The soft glow is not visible at the moment but as you proceed they will look very nice.

Note: Erase the edges with a Soft Brush.

And the bottom side. Keep layering the effect on top of one another to build up a powerful collection of highlights.

Step 28
Now you will use the same technique but this time create circle selections using the Elliptical Marquee Tool, invert
the selections and then use the Radial Gradient. You will set these layers to Overlay and 88% Opacity.

Step 29
Next you will need to use the Pen Tool (P) and create paths on different locations over the 4 triangles. Then you will
have to stroke those paths with a small white brush and set the layers to Overlay and Opacity so that the effect isn’t
overwhelming.

Step 30
Use the Pen Tool (P) and create 2 white strokes 1px that will intersect and use the Eraser Tool (E) on the edges to fade
them out softly. Then apply a soft white Outer Glow to it

Step 1

Create a new 2480×1748 pixels document in Photoshop, grab the Paint bucket tool (G) and fill it with
black (#000000).

Create a retro sci-fi movie poster in Photoshop https://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/photoshop/create-a-retro-sci-fi-mo...

Step 2

Create a new layer, select the brush tool (B) and use a large soft (hardness 0%) white brush to create some
spots in the center of the canvas. Reduce the opacity to around 10%. Create other spots on different
layers. In this way we realize a soft light effect in the center. Some of you may think that it’s more simple
to directly add a radial gradient to the background instead of using the brush tool and several layers. But I
prefer brushes because they give me more control and give a more various result.

Step 3

Download our concrete textures set (or the free sample in case you are not a member). Open the texture in
Photoshop and drag it into the main canvas. Press ctrl+T to activate the transform tool, then resize it to
match the canvas dimensions. Press shift+ctrl+U to desaturate the texture and set the layer blending mode
to overlay with opacity 35%.

Step 4

Download this free image of a Great Sphinx and open it in Photoshop. Press shift+ctrl+U to desaturate the
photo:

Step 5

Press ctrl+L to open levels window and use the arrows to increase a lot image contrasts:

Step 6

Drag this image into the main Photoshop document and set the layer to multiply to eliminate all white
areas and retain the black ones. Put the Sphinx at the bottom as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 7

Create a new layer and go to Filter>Render>Clouds. Now press ctrl+T to activate the transform tool and
enlarge a lot the image without modify its height.

Step 8

Set the layer to screen and reduce opacity to 20%. We have so used clouds to make more vivid the edges
of the composition and create a kind of fog effect.

Step 9

For the type treatment I’ve used a free sci-fi font titled Perfect dark. Write a word or a phrase. In case
letters are too close, open the character window (Window>Character) and modify distances.

stroke:

Step 11

At this point I want to apply other styles, but only to the stroke, not to the entire text. I want to create a
sort of custom font. Here is the trick: create a new transparent layer, select both the new layer and the text
one and press ctrl+E to merge them. Then right-click and add a color overlay and an outer glow:

Step 12

Duplicate the text layer and move the duplicated below the original one. With the duplicated layer
selected, go to filter>Blur>Motion blur and enter a value around 25 pixels with angle 90°.

Step 13

Now to create the 3d effect simply move lower down the last created layer. Here is what you should
obtain:

Step 14

Grab the rectangle tool and create a shape below the text effect. As we made with the text in step 10,
reduce fill opacity to 0% and add a stroke effect.

Step 15

Go to Edit>Transform>Perspective and bring near the bottom anchor points as shown in the screenshot
below:

Step 16

We have to repeat the same technique used with the text to change the stroke color and add an outer glow:
create a new layer and marge it with the one of the shape. At this point right-click on the layer thumbnail
and add the same styles used before with the text.

Step 17

To complete the type treatment, add a 3d look to the shape with the same method used for the text:
duplicate the shape layer and move the duplicated below the original one. Apply to the the duplicated
layer the motion blur filter and move the layer lower down. Here is my result:

Step 18

Let’s start adding color to the composition. Go to Layer>New adjustment layer>Gradient Map and add a
gradient going from dark purple (#290a59) to cyan (#00f0ff). set this layer to overlay with opacity 60%.

Step 19

Download our Old Paper Textures Vol1 (or the free sample). Open the op5 texture in Photoshop. We will
use this texture to create the dirty noise effect. Press shift+ctrl+U to desaturate the image. Then press
ctrl+I to inverse colors. Finally ctrl+L to activate levels and increase contrasts:

Step 20

Drag the texture into the main canvas. Re-size and rotate it (ctrl+T) and set the layer mode to screen:

Step 21

Create a new layer and fill it with black. Go to Filter>Render>Lens Flare and choose the 50-300mm zoom

Step 22

At this point I’ve decided to play a little bit with color corrections. I don’t like this blue atmosphere, so
I’ve added a new gradient map layer (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Gradient Map). This time I’ve used
the default gradient going from purple to orange. Set the layer to overlay with opacity 50%. You can
notice an atmosphere warmer now.

Step 23

I’m still not satisfied with the color result. Let’s apply a third gradient map, this time the default gradient
going from purple to yellow (check reverse). Set the layer to overlay with opacity 30%.

Step 24

The last adjustment layer: Brightness and contrasts (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Brightness/Contrast).
Increase brightess to +20 and contrast to +10.

Step 25

Create a retro sci-fi movie poster in Photoshop https://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/photoshop/create-a-retro-sci-fi-mo...

To brighten up the center, create a new layer and move it below the adjustment ones. Set the layer to
overlay. Grab a large soft yellow brush and make a spot in the center, over the lens flare. Reduce opacity
to around 25%.

Create a second layer (always set on overlay). This time grab a purple brush and paint over the edges of
the canvas, in order to add color to the noise effect.

Here is my result:

Step 26

A nice way to give a retro look to this image is to use a micro-pattern, to obtain an effect similare to old
videogames screen. Create a new 5×5 pixel document in Photoshop (with a transparent background),
zoom in, grab the Ellipse tool, hold down shift and create a circle in the center of the canvas. Then go to
Edit>Define pattern and save the pattern. You can now eliminate this document and switch to the main
canvas.

Step 27

Create a new layer immediately above the group of text layers. Go to Edit>Fill and select “pattern” for
use and choose the pattern just created. Finally press OK.

Step 28

Reduce fill opacity of the layer to 0%, and add a blu (#0d6fe8) color overlay set on “color burn”.

Step 29

Create a new group below the pattern layer and switch the blending mode to “color dodge”. Title this
layer “text light effects”. Create a new layer inside the group, grab a white soft brush and start making
some spots over the points you want to enhance. You’ll notice a strong light effects due to “color burn”
blend mode. Reduce the opacity of the layer to reduce light brightness. Create several spots on different
layers and play with their opacity.

Step 30

The composition is almost complete. The last touch are some text effects placed at the bottom of the
canvas – main actors’ names, and our work will look like a cool movie poster. The font used is

Step 4

Now that we have created a nice grunge background, we can add natural elements to the composition.
Photoshop give us the opportunity to mix elements using layers blending modes. I will show you how to
achieve beautiful results using this tool. Paste in the mountains image, place it at the bottom of the canvas
and set the layer to overlay. Now use the erase tool (E), or a mask if you prefer, to delete the upper part of
the mountains image. Use a large soft (hardness 0%) brush for this purpose

Step 5

Paste in the image of the tree. Flip it vertically (Edit>Transform>Flip Vertical) and place it at the top of
the canvas. Set the layer to overlay with opacity around 70%. Now once again use the erase tool to
remove unwanted pixels (the bottom of the image and the meadow). There is not a specific reason to
rotate the tree, simply I like these kind of surreal effects into my works. Also notice how blending options
allow us to create beautiful colors mix.

Step 6

I want to create a light effect around the tree. Create a new layer below the paper texture one and use a

outcome

Step 7

At this point I created 3D text using Xara3D, which is a super easy to use 3d tool for windows users. All
what I made to add a grunge style to the text was to apply this cool texture. If you haven’t xara3d, you can
create 3d text in Illustrator, or Cinema4D, or Photoshop CS4 (I haven’t again updated my version).
Anyway you will find 3D text into the source file available for premium members at the end of the post.

Step 8

There’s nothing better then a lens flare to enhance your text ;-). Create a new layer above the text and fill

Step 9

Let’s Analise together our work. It’s evident that it needs more contrast, more color harmony and more
details. My first idea was to introduce 2 animals into the composition because I believed they could
perfectly match with the natural landscape. This is why I put in a bear and a tiger. But after a coffee break
I observed my work and I wasn’t satisfied. So I decided to firstly focus my attention to color adjustments.

Step 10

The first thing to do is to strongly decrease saturation. Go to Layer>New Adjustment

Layer>Hue/Saturation and set saturation to -60.

Step 11

Use curves to increase image contrasts. Create a new adjustment layer and this time select Curves. Create
a “S” using the curve to give vividness to the image:

Step 12

I always end up color adjustments with a gradient map. This is a step I love because I have the impression
to have full color control and my images achieve more harmony. Try this exercise: open some of your old
Photoshop works and create a new gradient map adjustment (Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Gradient
Map), then choose a nice gradient, set the layer to overlay and reduce opacity to around 70%. Isn’t it nice?
Try different gradients until you find the best one. In this tutorial, for example, I have in mind 2 colors I’d
like to enhance: blue and yellow. So I create a gradient map layer going from blue (#080d4e) to yellow
(#f6f091). And this is the result (my layer’s opacity is 40%):

Step 13

Open in Photoshop the image of the dude and extract it using the pen tool. Paste it into our document
(below adjustment layers). You need to resize it, so click ctrl+T to select the transform tool and make it
smaller.

Step 14

There’s a dude and a light source: we must add shadow behind the dude. So duplicate the dude layer and
select the distort tool (Edit>Transform>Distort). Now select the top-left and top-right anchor points and
drag them below the bottom-left and the bottom-right. Then click enter to apply the transformation. Use

Create a new document and make it whatever size you please. Select the fill tool from the toolbar and
make the foreground a grey color. Fill the background layer with the grey color. This gives the
background a softer feel and won’t be as harsh on the eyes as a white foreground, especially when it’s
going to be mixed with large popping colors.

Create a new layer. Select the gradient tool from the toolbar. Pick the colorful preset as shown. Also make
sure you choose the angle gradient from the gradient settings at the top of the screen. It is important to the
effect.

Drag and make the gradient in the new layer as shown. The longer you drag the gradient line, the more
subtle the gradient is between the colors. You are going to want a somewhat even dispersion but you can
mess around yourself.

Once the gradient is made, select the circular marquee tool from the tool bar. Now on the same layer as
the gradient, hold shift and make a circular marquee over a spot of color that you would like to make a
shape from. Right click and select layer via cut. This will cut the shape from the gradient and produce a
new layer with the circular color. You can proceed to do this as many times as you like, cutting circles of
varying sizes from the gradient layer.

You should now be left with something like the image seen above, depending on how many circles you
cropped out. Now it is up to you on how you want to style and position the piece. Move the circle layers
around and create a composition that you like. It can be with as many amount of circles as you want. Note
that it helps to have circles that vary in scale. It gives the piece a much better dynamic.

6 of 30 10-Jan-18, 9:44 AM
Creating a Spectrum Poster Design in Photoshop https://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/creating-a-spectrum-poster-design...

Now you can start adding some different circles and shapes to mix up the composition and the elements.
So, select the marquee tool and make another circle. You can choose from using the fill tool or gradient
tool this time and begin by making new colored shapes. In my example, I mixed it up from you using the
gradient tool and using some fill colors like white. Once the circles are made, select the rectangular
marquee tool. Make a rectangular shape that dissects the circle on your chosen layer. Hit backspace/delete
and then press cmd+d to deselect the marquee. Proceed then to rotate the circle and hitting the shortcut
cmd+t. Repeat this process a few times over to create some unique shapes.

Another cool shape I like to make is a circular stroke bar. Now like most things in Photoshop, there are
countless ways to produce elements with the same outcome. How I generally make these is very straight
forward. Make a new layer and select the circular marquee tool once again, hold shift and drag out to
make a proportional circle. Then right click on the marquee and select stroke. A popup box will appear.
Make the stroke as thick or thin as you want by altering the pixel size on the stroke in the box. I chose a
thick stroke for this at 20px and filled the color with white. Select okay. This stroke can then be cut and
dissected, similar to the previous step.

Creating a Spectrum Poster Design in Photoshop https://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/creating-a-spectrum-poster-design...

For this step, I wanted to add in some even smaller circles/dots to the composition. In every piece, the
small details play just as important a role as the large elements. The details really bring the piece together
in my opinion.

Select the brush tool and choose a brush with a hard edged with a low pixel size varying from 2px to 20
px. With brush selected, paint some circles varying in size around the composition. Don’t over do it on
this stage. you want to create some dynamic but you don’t want it to end up looking like a cheap splash
brush.

Creating a Spectrum Poster Design in Photoshop https://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/creating-a-spectrum-poster-design...

Now to help bring the same shapes together, I’m gonna create some nice angular vectors to give the piece
an extra dimension. Select the pen tool, with a white foreground and very simply draw some interesting
shapes that bridge the circles on the composition. It make take a few tries to get a nice interesting shape
that helps the composition. When the shape has been created, lower the opacity on the shape. This gives it
a nice glassy, futuristic look. Repeat this step however many times you desire.

Again to really bring the piece along, I added some more new shapes. This time with some simple lines
and squares. To make a line, simply select the line tool from the toolbar. Make a new layer, and then drag
the line on the canvas. You can vary its weight from the toolbar on the top of the screen as shown. And to
make the square, it’s the same way as you would using the circles just instead of selecting the circular
marquee, you select the rectangular marquee. This is achieved by clicking and holding the circular
marquee and then dragging out to the right. this brings up a selection of the different shapes you can
select with the marquee tool.

Creating a Spectrum Poster Design in Photoshop https://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/creating-a-spectrum-poster-design...

To bring the piece together, I used a little trick that I learned that works better than a colour balance in this
instance. Create a new layer and similar to what you did in step 2, create a new angular gradient using the
same multicolored gradient as before. Once created, set the blending mode on the layer to soft light. This
casts a feint sheen of colour over the composition and gives it a nice finish.

Creating a Spectrum Poster Design in Photoshop https://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/creating-a-spectrum-poster-design...

For the finishing touch, I added in some typography to give the piece a focal point and tie it all together.
Select the type tool and click on the canvas, this will bring up a new layer. I named the piece spectrum
and said the type in Helvetica bold. Once you are happy with the type, you can dissect and chop it up by
rasterizing the layer. To rasterize, simply go to layer, rasterize, type as shown. Once the layer is rasterized,
you can cut the text up and alter it how you please, adding different gradients and such.

extremely easy to do.

I hope you’ve learned something new and have
chosen to use this new found knowledge for the powers of good! ;-)

Step 1

Create a new A4 document in Photoshop.

Step 2

Grab the Paint Bucket tool (G), set a light-desaturated yellow (#f4e0a9) as foreground color, and fill the
background layer.

Step 3

Download this image of a frozen landscape and paste it into the Photoshop canvas (File>Open and select

the image).

Step 4

At this point we have to create the spots that will be used later to mask some areas of the landscape.
Instead of creating a first spot and then duplicate it again and again (so boring!) we will create a pattern.

Before starting with the pattern, we need to make order using Photoshop guides. Place 4 guides at the
same distance – 200 px – from each side of the canvas. Then drag other 4 guides, this time with a distance
of 100 px from the edges. These guides will be useful when we will define the area covered by the
pattern. Also by creating order you can focus the attention on the most important areas of the composition

and easily create symmetrical artworks.

How to create guides? You can create a guide by clicking and dragging from the ruler. If you want to
hide guides go to View>Show>Guides.

Step 5

Create a new 150×150 pixels document in Photoshop with a transparent background. Grab the Ellipse tool
and create a circle. Place it in the center of the canvas. Now go to Edit>Define pattern and save the new
pattern.

How to create perfect circles with the Ellipse tool? Simply hold down Shift while drawing the circle

How to align something with the center of the canvas? Press ctrl+A to select the entire canvas. Then
use the align tool (in the option bar – on top) to align the object.

Step 6

Switch to the main Photoshop canvas. Here create a new layer, grab the Rectangular Marquee tool and
select the center area or the canvas. You can notice I created another guide at 2500 pixels height.

of the spots to select its pixels. Then hide the visibility of spots’ layer:

Step 17

Let’s add some type. I’ve used 3 font: Helvetica for the 3, Musa for WeGraphics and Ballpark for “best
design resources”. To give a grunge look to the text too, grab the eraser tool and use a grunge brush to
erase a little bit the edges.

At this point we need a texture to add the old style to our composition. I’ve used the page of an old book,
wrinkled it, and scanned at 300 dpi.

Premium members will find the texture into the source file.

How to design a grunge styled portrait in Photoshop https://wegraphics.net/blog/tutorials/photoshop/how-to-design-a-grung...

Lady face
Splatter brushes
Black grunge texture

Step 1

Open the photo of the lady in Photoshop and go to Image>Image size. Switch the width value to 2000px
and make sure that “constrain proportions” is checked. We have resized the image because too large and it
could be more difficult to find a texture of the same size.

Step 2

With the Lasso tool select the head of the lady and add a layer mask (click on the “add layer mask button”
at the bottom of the layer’s window). Layer mask is the best way to isolate an object without lose pixels.
This is not a simple argument for Photoshop beginners, and I suggest you to read some articles about this
topic that is fundamental if you want to seriously work with Photoshop.

Step 3

Select the lady’s layer (not the mask) and go to Image>Adjustments>Threshold. Put 90 as threshold
value. Now you can use the erase tool to eliminate unwanted pixels, or (the better method) select the mask
and remove unwanted pixels with a black brush. (When you use layer mask, black eliminate while white
restore the image).

Step 4

The aim of this step is to isolate black parts of the image. So make sure to have black as foreground color
and go to select>Color range. Set fuzziness to 200 and hit OK.

Step 5

In the Paths window click on the right arrow and select Make Work Path with tolerance 1,0. Now in the
layer window create a new layer, grab the pen tool and right click on the canvas>Fill Path. Call this layer
“lady black” and hide the other lady’s layer. Voila! White has disappeared. You can also delete the path.

Step 6

Create a new layer and with a black brush start painting over the white parts in the hair of the lady. Also
create a new layer, fill it with white and place it below the “lady black” layer.

Step 7

Create a new layer and use splatter brushes to paint around the hair of the lady. This is my result:

Step 8

Paste in the texture. At this point we have to play again with selections and layer mask: with the texture
layer selected, ctrl+click on the “lady black” layer to select its pixels. Then shift+ctrl+click on the layers
where you’ve painted on with the brushes to select also their pixels. You should obtain something like
this:

Step 9

Add a layer mask to the texture layer. Now you can hide all the other layers except the white background.

Step 10

Now we can add a gradient adjustment layer (click on the “create new adjustment layer” at the bottom of
the layer window and select “gradient”). You can choose one of the default gradients or create a new one
with the colors you prefer. Set the gradient layer to overlay. Finished!
