Lesson Plan – mathematics

Date: 14-09-2024 Grade -04

Chapter – 05 Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Measurements Time Duration: 45 mint

1. Objective:
In this chapter, students will learn about various units of measurement, including
length, mass, and capacity. They will explore conversions between units such as
kilometers to meters, grams to kilograms, and liters to milliliters. The chapter will
also cover problem-solving involving addition and subtraction of different units.

2. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1. Convert units of length (e.g., km to m, m to cm).
2. Convert units of mass and capacity (e.g., kg to g, L to mL).
3. Solve real-life word problems involving measurement conversions, additions, and
subtractions.
4. Understand the relationship between different units of measurement.
5. Apply knowledge to solve practical problems related to measuring distances,
weights, and volumes.

3. KWL Method
Step 1: K - What do Students Know? (5-7 minutes)
Ask students to brainstorm what they already know about measurements (length,
weight, and capacity). For example, “We measure distances in kilometers and
meters.”
Discuss everyday scenarios where students use measurements, such as measuring
height, distance between two places, or weighing ingredients.

Step 2: W - What do Students Want to Know? (5-7 minutes)

Ask students what they want to know or what confuses them about measurements.
For example, “How do we convert kilometers to meters?” or “How do we add
different units of measurement?”
Record their questions on the board.

Step 2: L - (What Students Learn):

As the lesson progresses, keep track of what students have learned, answering the
questions they asked earlier in the W phase. For example, “We learned that 1
kilometer = 1000 meters.”
4. Activities
Activity 1: Conversion Practice.
Objective: Practice converting between units of length, mass, and capacity.
Materials: Worksheets, rulers, weighing scales, and water bottles for practical
demonstrations.
Procedure:
 Provide students with a worksheet that contains conversion problems (e.g.,
“Convert 5 km to meters,” “Convert 2 kg to grams”).
 In small groups, students will use the tools provided to measure the length of
objects, weigh items, and measure the capacity of containers.
 Have students share their answers and explain the steps they followed.
Activity 2: Word Problem Solving.
Objective: Solve word problems involving measurement.
Procedure:
 Present word problems on the board (e.g., “Farhan is 1.5 m tall. He stands on a
70 cm stool. How tall is he now?”).
 Guide students through the process of solving the problem step-by-step.
Emphasize unit conversions where necessary.
 After solving together as a class, assign a few similar problems for independent
practice.

5. Assessment
1. Formative:
Oral Questions:
Ask students to explain how they converted units of length or mass. For example,
“How did you convert 3 km to meters?”
KWL Chart:
Check the L section to ensure that students have learned the key concepts
discussed.
2. Summative Assessment:
Worksheet/Quiz:
 Create a short quiz or worksheet covering conversions, addition, and
subtraction of different units of measurement.
 Include a mix of multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blanks, and short word problems
(e.g., “Add 5 km and 230 m,” or “Subtract 1 kg 200 g from 3 kg”).
Rubric:
 Full Understanding (4 pts): Successfully converts units and solves all word
problems correctly.
 Good Understanding (3 pts): Converts units correctly but makes minor
mistakes in word problems.
 Basic Understanding (2 pts): Struggles with conversions and word problems
but shows effort.
 Limited Understanding (1 pt.): Needs more practice in understanding basic
conversions and problem-solving.
