CHEM-101-Spring 2023

Assignment-2
1. Two beams, one of red light and the other of blue light, of the same intensity are incident
on a metallic surface to emit photoelectrons. Which emits electrons of greater frequency?
(Blue)

2. Calculate the kinetic energy of a photoelectron (in eV) emitted on shining light of
wavelength 6.2 × 10-6 m on a metal surface. The work function of the metal is 0.1 eV.
(Kmax = 0.1 eV)

3. Consider the following three moving objects:

(i) A golf ball with a mass of 45.9 g moving at a speed of 50.0 m/s.
(ii) An electron moving at a speed of 3.50 x 105 m/s
(iii) A neutron moving at a speed of 2.3 x 102 m/s. List the three objects in order from
shortest to longest de Broglie wavelength. (Hint: ℷ = h/mv )

4. *A beam of light with an intensity of 15W is incident on a copper plate (φ = 7.43 x 10 -19
J). Electrons with a minimum wavelength of 3.75 x 10-10 m are ejected from the surface of
the copper. (Hint W=Js-1).
a. Calculate the frequency of the incident light.( ν = 3.71 x 1015 s-1)
b. Calculate the maximum number of electrons that a 3.0-second incident light pulse can
eject. (1.8 x 1019 electrons)
c. If a new light source (Ei = 7.19 x 10-19 J) with an intensity of 35 W is incident on the
copper surface, what is the maximum number of electrons that can be ejected from a
6.0-second pulse of light? (Hint: Ei < φ for copper)

5. What will be the de – Broglie wavelength when the kinetic energy of the electron increases
by five times? (λ reduces √5 times)

6. The surface of iron metal is irradiated with light of frequency 1.5x1015 Hz, causing the
emission of electrons from its surface. The Kinetic energy of these electrons is measured
to be 1.52 eV. Calculate the work function of Iron. (φ = 4.69 eV)

7. Calculate the wavelength and kinetic energy of the wave associated with an electron
moving at a velocity of 2.192x103 kms-1. (λ = 3.3 x 10-10m; K.E = 2.19x10-18J)

8. An electron emitted from the surface of a certain metal has a Kinetic energy of 2.43x10-19
J. Calculate the momentum of this electron. (6.65x 10-25 kgms-1)
9. What is the energy, wavelength, and momentum of an electron having a velocity of
1.094x106 ms-1? (E= 5.445x10-19J; P= 9.956×10-25 kgms-1; λ = 6.66×10-10m)

10. Calculate the longest wavelength of a photon that can eject an electron from the surface of
copper (work function= 4.64 eV) (λ = 267nm).

11. Circle the correct answer to indicate whether the following sets of quantum numbers are
allowed or not allowed. For each set that is not allowed, briefly explain why it is not
allowed. For each set that is allowed, identify the orbital in terms of n, l, and m values.
(a) n = 3, l = 3, m = 0
(b) n = 2, l = 1, m = 0
(c) n = 4, l = 0, m = 0
(d) n = 3, l =1, m = 2

12. How many maxima would you expect to find in the radial probability function for the 4s
orbital of the hydrogen atom? How many nodes would you expect in this function? (4; 3)

13. Consider a fictitious one-dimensional system with one electron. The wave function for the
electron, drawn below, is Ψ(x) = sin x from x = 0 to x = 2π.

(a) Sketch the probability density, Ψ2(x), from x = 0 to x = 2π.

(b) At what values of x will there be the greatest probability of finding the electron?
(c) What is the probability that the electron will be found at x = π? What is such a point in
a wave function called?
