Chapter I
Introduction

Background of Study

Many individuals experience and struggling with their hair and scalp condition, such as

thinning hair, hair loss, breakage and slow growth. Some may suffer from dandruff and itchy

scalp. These hair and scalp problems can lead to discomfort (Staff, 2023). Shampoo is an

essential product used by individuals in their daily hygiene routine to maintain healthy hair and

scalp. A shampoo not only provides the cleaning of the scalp skin and hair as its primary

function, but in addition also serves to condition and beautify (Rathi et al., 2018).

The beneficial plants for hair and scalp are Hibiscus rosa- sinensis, Cocos nucifera, and

Aloe barbadensis miller. Hibiscus rosa- sinensis give nutrients for the hair and scalp as well as

antioxidants, vitamins, and mineral, that can stop hair loss. It has a high concentration of vitamin

C, which boosts the production of collagen, a protein that helps to strengthen hair. It also

includes amino acids, which help nourish follicles and encourage the growth of healthy hair

(Desk, 2023). However, according to Ayurveda (2021), that hibiscus leaf extracts are beneficial

for hair because they regulate the pitta dosha. The pitta dosha governs the body’s metabolism. An

imbalance between pitta and dosha is the source of excess heat build-up in the body. It damages

hair, making it thinner and leading early graying.

While Cocos nucifera can improve the health and condition of your hair. Coconut oil is

edible oil made from pressing the meat inside coconut, it is a common and effective moisturizing

ingredient in lotions and hair care products. It works by helping prevent protein loss in the hair
because it has caprylic acid C, myristic acid, and linoleic acid (Austin, 2023). However, coconut

oil is incredibly difficult to remove from hair. This is due to the oil's ability to cover the hair shaft

and its extreme density. Because of this, it could take several shampooing’s to completely

remove the oil (Foreo, 2022).

Then Aloe barbadensis miller is a great natural treatment for dry hair or an itchy scalp, it

has nourishing properties, and the vitamins and minerals that are present in the plant keep your

hair strong and healthy. Because of its antibacterial and antifungal, studies indicate that it helps

with dandruff (Ruggeri, 2023). However, if person have an allergy to an aloe vera can cause

specific side effects such as itching, burning sensation, rashes, and hives (Jangam, 2024).

The study aims to make a shampoo product using the Hibiscus Rosa- Sinensis, Cocos

Nucifera, and Aloe Barbedensis Miller because these natural ingredients are known for their

beneficial properties for hair and scalp.

Chapter II
Review of Related Literature

Hibiscus rosa - sinensis

The saponins in Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis is the natural cleansing instrument that works

for hair cleansing in addition of amino acids stimulate the keratin production which gives

structure for hair (Binu, 2021). Dermatologist mentioned in their Journal of Emerging

Technologies and Innovative Research, that people who has low porosity hair, using Hibiscus

Rosa-Sinensis can be a potential solution to hair and scalp problems because Hibiscus Rosa-

Sinensis is rich in amino acids, antioxidants, vitamin C, mucilage fiber, flavonoids, and moisture.

Fresh Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis flower has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties,

and a high level of vitamin C that is essential for collagen production and hair growth, which

helps to improve hair growth and scalp health (Kiran, 2023). According to Arshiya Syeda (2023),

that the natural coloring pigments in our body, antioxidants, and vitamins present in hibiscus are

said to help in producing melanin, and hibiscus has been used as a natural dye to cover gray hair

traditionally. It helps prevent premature graying of hair and is a good hair conditioner. When the

first traces of gray hair appear, they should begin using hibiscus for hair, use on a regular basis to

delay premature graying. So that their natural hair color may be preserved and harm to the hair

pigment can be avoided the antioxidants in hibiscus, which fight free radicals (Sushimita, 2023).

Hibiscus has been linked to headaches, ringing in the ear, nausea, and dermatitis. It may also

cause blood pressure to drop, and hibiscus may dangerous to those who are sensitive or allergic

to Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis and to members of the Malvaceae plant family (Metcalf, 2023).
Cocos nucifera

Cocos nucifera has packed with fatty acids and a lauric acid a type of saturated fat

abundant used to restore luster to dry, tame frizz, relieve dandruff, protect and restore the

damaged hair (Wong, 2023). Lauric acid is the main medium-chain fatty acid found in coconut

oil. Because of this coconut oil has long and straight structure that makes it easier for the hair

shaft to absorb it deeply (West, 2021). Coconut oil can be absorbed by the hair, because it is very

notorious hair care product. It works well as a detangler, heat protectant, deep conditioner, deep

cleansing and lice treatment. It might also aid in hair growth and the management of dandruff

(Shoemaker, 2022). Coconut oil has the ability to make fine hair appear oily, lifeless, and heavy,

refrain from building up because it might make coarse hair tight in certain individuals. Coconut

oil may also result in blocked pores (Wong, 2023). Despite the fact that coconut oil is fantastic

for hair, using too much of it might result in oily hair since it builds up on the scalp and make

hair appear oily (Foreo, 2022).

Aloe barbadensis miller

Aloe vera is a plant that has gel-like inside of thick leaves and according to National

Cancer Institute (NCI), it is composed of water, carbohydrates polymers, and these are the

ingredients that make it ideal for managing hair and scalp problem (Cavallo, 2023). An aloe vera

contains an abundance of strong antioxidants called polyphenols, which neutralized harmful free

radicals in the body. Aloe vera gels are typically regarded as skin safe, however aloe vera can

cause excessive oil production or dryness if it is used excessively or overly (Memon, 2022).

Vitamins A, C, and E can be found in aloe vera. These three vitamins support healthy cell growth

and lustrous hair by aiding in cell turn over. Aloe vera gel also contains folic acid and vitamin
B12. These two elements together can prevent hair loss (Watson, 2023).

Lane mentioned that Aloe barbadensis miller has benefits for hair that can heal the scalp

problems. Aloe barbadensis miller is a humectant substance that help hydrate the skin, nails and

hair because humectants attract water. The examples of humectants are hyaluronic acid and

glycerin (Wicks, 2022). Vitamins A, C, and E can be found in aloe vera. These three vitamins

support healthy cell growth and lustrous hair by aiding in cell turn over. Aloe vera gel also

contains folic acid and vitamin B12. These two elements together can prevent hair loss.

Additionally, the common product that individuals apply to their skin after being in the sun is

aloe vera. This is as a result of its cooling qualities and high collagen content. Aloe vera's high

vitamin content makes it possible that it could also help your hair heal from sun damage (Watson,

2023). In general, there are no risk associated with administering aloe vera topically. For certain

people, it could be triggering an allergy, leading to a skin rash (WebMd, 2024).
