1. What is the nearest concept about conditionals?
A. Conditionals, typically (though not always!) expressed in English as
sentences of the form "If .................. , (then) ..................
B. Refers to a pattern used in predictive conditional sentences, i.e. those
that concern consequences of a probable future event (see Types of
conditional sentence).

Conditional tenses are used to speculate about


what could happen, what might have happened, and what we wish would
happen.
In English, most sentences using the conditional contain the word if.

1. The if part (if clause)

The ZERO CONDITIONAL


• Is used for when the time being referred to is now or always and the situation is real and possible.
• Often used to refer to general truths
• The tense in both parts of the sentence is the simple present.
• The word "if" can usually be replaced by the word "when" without changing the meaning.

• Is used to refer to the present or future where the situation is real.
• Refers to a possible condition and its probable result

• Used to refer to a time that is now or any time, and a situation that is unreal
• These sentences are not based on fact
• Used to refer to a hypothetical condition and its probable result
• The if clause uses the simple past, and the main clause uses the present conditional.

TYPE 3 CONDITIONAL
• Used to refer to a time that is in the past, and a situation that is contrary to reality.
• The facts they are based on are the opposite of what is expressed.
• Used to refer to an unreal past condition and its probable past result.
• The if clause uses the past perfect, and the main clause uses the perfect conditional.

Read the text about poor old Marge and then complete the third conditional sentences about her
day using the prompts provided.

Marge is a woman of 55 who lives on her own in a small house in Calapan. She did not
have a very nice day yesterday!
As she was leaving the house, she forgot her bus ticket. Only when she got to the bus stop
did she realize this, so she had to hurry back to the house. She opened the door, put the keys on
the telephone table, went into the kitchen to get her bus ticket and left again without her keys.
She caught the 8.42 a.m. bus instead of her usual 8.30 a.m. bus and arrived at work about
ten minutes late. Mr. Dela Cruz, her boss, was in a bad mood yesterday and shouted at her when
she arrived late. As a result, they had an argument in front of all the other people in the office.
Mr. Dela Cruz told her she would have to stay behind for fifteen minutes at lunch to finish some
important work.
At lunch, Marge only had time for a quick sandwich and didn't go to the office cafeteria
with the others as normal. Everyone returned from lunch very happy because they had met a
