Course Name: Living in the IT Era
Course Credit: 3 Units
Course Description: This course offers a comprehensive
introduction to the foundational concepts
of Information Technology (IT), covering
various software applications and modern
digital tools necessary for navigating the
digital world. Over 18 weeks, students will
explore key topics such as computer
systems, software, networks, web
technologies, and essential office
productivity tools. Special emphasis will
be placed on the practical use of
applications like Microsoft Office (Excel,
Word, PowerPoint), Canva, and Lark,
alongside cutting-edge topics such as AI
prompt engineering and sustainability in
IT. By the end of the course, students will
also develop a strong understanding of
digital safety and privacy, culminating in a
campaign project to promote best
practices.

Course Objectives At the end of the course, the students will
be able to:

1. Understand the evolution and


developments in computer hardware
and software, from past generations to
modern and future trends.
2. Examine the components of an
information system, including
hardware, software, data, networks,
and the roles of personnel, services,
and partners.
3. Acquire a foundational understanding
of the internet and web technologies.
4. Analyze the principles of digital
technology, including its impact on
social change, and the importance of
privacy in information technology.
5. Develop and enhance practical skills
in using modern application software,
including MS Word, MS Excel, and
MS PowerPoint for document
processing, data analysis, and
presentations.
6. Utilize graphic design software like
Canva and collaboration tools such as
Lark for team projects and
communication.
7. Understand sustainability practices
within the realm of information
technology and how IT can contribute
to a greener future.
8. Promote digital safety and privacy by
creating awareness campaigns and
advocating for responsible technology
use.

Classroom Policies Arrive on time and remain for the entire class period or
until dismissed. All cell phones, smartphones, and
other electronic devices (e.g., pagers, iPods) must be
turned off or set to vibrate and kept out of sight. In
addition to adhering to university discipline rules,
students are expected to conduct themselves
appropriately; dishonesty and violence will not be
tolerated. Students who are more than 30 minutes late
will be marked absent.

at the Dean’s office from 4:00-5:00 PM on
