Learning Activities

Essential Question
1. If using technology, refer to slide 4 of the slide presentation.
2. If not using technology, write the question on the board.
“How do good public speakers express their thoughts and feelings?”
3. Instruct the whole class to reflect on the question for at least a minute and call on a
few to share their answers. Elicit answers that show how public speakers express
their thoughts and feelings. If necessary, use the following question to help students
get to the closest answer, which is that good public speakers express their thoughts
and feelings through confidence: “What enables speakers to share their thoughts
and feelings effectively in public?”

A. Motivation

Warm Up!

1. Instruct the students to do the following:

● Part 1: Within 15 minutes, create an imaginary animal. Come up with detailed
information about your imaginary animal, such as its size, color, habitat, the
sound that it makes, extraordinary abilities, and other physical qualities. You
may even provide a sketch of it.
● Part 2: Imagine that you are the expert zoologist in the care and preservation of
your imaginary animal. You are the only one on the planet who knows
everything there is to know about it.
● Part 3. Present your imaginary animal in front of the class and answer relevant
questions with an air of authority and confidence.

2. After the activity, have the students talk about the activity. Have the students talk
about the confidence they felt when they pretended that they are experts on what
they talked about.

B. Lesson Proper

Springboard

The teacher may say, “Public speaking is not an easy feat, especially if you only do it
rarely. One reason why seasoned speakers are effective in public speaking is that
they have confidence. But how do we develop confidence? In this lesson, we will
learn how we can develop confidence when doing public speaking.”

Review

Before proceeding to the lesson proper, ask the students this question: “How do we
become confident in doing public speaking?”

Presentation of Lesson

1. After the review of the lesson, proceed to the lesson proper.

2. If using technology, begin from slide 7 of the slide presentation.

Discussion

After tackling the concepts from the study guide, you may engage the students in a
discussion by asking them what other tips they can think of that would help them
build their confidence in public speaking. As they come up with tips of their own,
write down their answers on the board. Then, discuss the following additional tips
on how to become confident when doing public speaking.

1. Make sure that your speech is polished. Knowing that your speech is polished
gives you the assurance that you are delivering a good speech, thus making you
confident. Do the following in order to polish your speech.
● Check for factual errors.
● Check for content inconsistency.
● Check for grammar errors.

2. Master the pronunciation of difficult words. If there are words in your speech
that you find difficult to pronounce, you might find yourself feeling less
confident. As such, you should practice mastering the pronunciation of those

3

words until you are able to say them naturally and without any struggle or
awkwardness.

3. Anticipate the questions that the audience might ask. If you are speaking at
an event where the audience can ask questions after your speech, then you
need to think of possible questions the audience might throw at you. This way,
you are prepared when they finally do ask you some questions.

4. Focus on your speech. Sometimes, new ideas will pop out right at the moment
while you deliver your speech. Refrain from blurting them out right away as
doing so may distract you and keep you from saying other pertinent information
in your speech, which can also lead to a diminishing level of confidence.

5. Do not just memorize every single word of your speech. You also need to
master the content and the flow of your speech as doing so will enable you to
recover easily when you forget the exact line you are supposed to say. Knowing
that you mastered the content and flow of your speech also gives you assurance,
thus boosting your confidence.

Evaluation
Drills

Ask the students to accomplish the following drill and speaking prompt. You may
print copies of the worksheet from here.

Identify if the statement is true or false.

1. You can do vocalization to relax your speech muscles. (true)

2. Overthinking is not good, so practicing the speech once is enough. (false)
3. Do not look at the audience to remain calm. (false)
4. Memorize every word of your speech. (false)
5. Building confidence starts even before the delivery of the speech. (true)

Write a short speech about the topic below. Then, annotate the parts
where you think the gestures and emotions should be different to showcase
confidence and ease of delivery.
Topic: The importance of cultivating healthy habits

Synthesis

Synthesis Activity

1. Divide the class into four groups and have each of the groups write and
deliver a speech about a school issue they are interested in.
2. Have the class choose a representative who will deliver the speech.
3. Make sure to tell them that everyone must take note of the tips on how to
become confident.
4. Ask the following questions to guide the students in processing.
● How did you decide on the topic you chose?
● How did you decide who will deliver the speech?
● How similar/different are the deliveries of the speech of all the
representatives?
● What made the other speakers look confident or not confident?
● Based on the activity, what should one remember in order to be
confident when delivering a speech?
