17.10 FORCES ACTING ON ABUTMENTS®
The various forces to be considered in the design of abutments are as follows:
1. Dead Load due to superstructure
2. Live load on the superstructure
- Self-weight of the abutment
- Longitudinal forces due to tractive effort and braking
. Forces due to temperature variation
Earth pressure due to backfill,
The abutment should be designed to resist all these forces. Typical forces
acting on an abutment and the resulting stress distribution at the base of the
abutment is shown in Fig. 17.7.

Analysis of forces
Total vertical forces = 1"
WW, +, +0, +,
where Weight of rectangular portion of abutment
ive and dead loads = 20 kN
* W,,= Vertical load due to earth = 15 KN
Total vertical forces are
W= (75 + 37.5 + 20 + 15) = 147.5 KN
Considering the moments of all forces about the toe 4, we have
M = (95 x 0.5) + (37.5 * 1.33) + (15.1.67) — (20 * 1)
= 102.3 kNm

Oy = 73.75 (1 + 0.93) = 144 kN/m?
Og = 73.75 (1 — 0.93) = 7.6 kN/m?
The maximum stress O, is less than the safe bearing capacity of the soil.
Hence the stresses are within safe permissible limits.
Check for safety against sliding
Total vertical forces W= 147.5 KN

blacks
Factor of safety = (24)- 3.68> 2.00
Hence the abutment has sufficient factor of safety against sliding.
