EXAMPLES: Solve each word problem by writing and solving a system of equations.
1) One number is four less than eleven times another. The sum of the two numbers is 92. What are the
numbers?

2) Cory has $24 more than twice as much as Stan. Together they have $150. How much money does each
have?

3) Bill Legg is the place kicker for his high school football team. Last season he kicked 38 times and never
missed. Each field goal scored 3 points and each point after touchdown scored 1 point for a total of 70
points. How many field goals and how many extra points did Bill kick last season?

4) The school that James goes to is selling tickets to the annual dance competition. On the first day of ticket sales
the school sold 2 adult tickets and 9 child tickets for a total of $109. The school took in $186 on the second
day by selling 12 adult tickets and 2 child tickets. What is the price each of one adult ticket and one child
ticket?

5) The senior classes at High School A and High School B planned separate trips to the state fair. The senior class
at High School A rented and filled 3 vans and 2 buses with 135 students. High School B rented and filled 6
vans and 13 buses with 783 students. Every van had the same number of students in it as did the buses. Find
the number of students in each van and in each bus.

Solve each word problem by writing and solving a system of equations.
6) Alberto and Aliyah are selling fruit for a school fundraiser. Customers can buy small boxes of tangerines and
large boxes of tangerines. Alberto sold 12 small boxes of tangerines and 6 large boxes of tangerines for a total
of $330. Aliyah sold 5 small boxes of tangerines and 12 large boxes of tangerines for a total of $318. Find the
cost each of one small box of tangerines and one large box of tangerines.

7) Darryl's school is selling tickets to a play. On the first day of ticket sales the school sold 3 adult tickets and 12
student tickets for a total of $96. The school took in $108 on the second day by selling 12 adult tickets and 2
student tickets. What is the price each of one adult ticket and one student ticket?

8) Ming and Eduardo each improved their yards by planting grass sod and geraniums. They bought their supplies
from the same store. Ming spent $16 on 2 ft² of grass sod and 1 geranium. Eduardo spent $64 on 4 ft² of
grass sod and 6 geraniums. What is the cost of one ft² of grass sod and the cost of one geranium?

9) The senior classes at High School A and High School B planned separate trips to the local amusement park.
The senior class at High School A rented and filled 12 vans and 1 bus with 145 students. High School B rented
and filled 2 vans and 7 buses with 195 students. Each van and each bus carried the same number of students.
How many students can a van carry? How many students can a bus carry?

10) The sum of two numbers is 64. Twice the smaller number is 10 less than the larger number. Find the
numbers.

11) The length of a rectangle is 5 more than twice the width. The perimeter is 130. What is the area of the
rectangle?

12) Since my uncle's farm appeared to be overrun with chickens and dogs, I asked him how many of each he
had. Being a puzzler as well as a farmer, my uncle replied that his dogs and chickens had a total of 148 legs
and 60 heads. How many dogs and how many chickens does my uncle have?

13) Marcie has $84 less than three times as much as Sue. Together they have $132. How much money does
Marcie have?
