4. suggestion "sandwich" - that is, give a compliment or say something


positive, make a suggestion, and then say another positive comment.

Lesson Observed: On August 21, I observe an English lesson in grade 8.


The class was teaching ‘The Old Woman and the Lime Tree’. It is a lesson in
Nepal’s national curriculum as prescribed by the Curriculum Development
Centre, Nepal. The objective of the lesson was to comprehend the lesson and
identify the text features. The observation was made to see how the asks
effective question and provides opportunities for students to think critically.
Feedback for my peer: I was impressed by the PowerPoint presentation
prepare by him. We had pre observation meeting. My peer had brought the
question wonderfully. He had visual accompanying to ignite the ideas. While
he was executing the plan in the class he was picking the students first.
When he did so he was not able to catch the attention of the other students.
Thus, one suggestion I provided is to use the APPLE (Ask, Pause, Pick, Listen
and Evaluate) technique of asking questions in the class. Moreover, when he
picked one of the students in the class directly, the student was a bit
nervous and not ready to answers. So, I also suggested him to let the
students discuss the question with peers before you pick one. Next, thing is
that he was taking too many individuals in the class to seek answer of the
same questions. Because of the many of students were losing interests. For
that, I suggested him to set time for one activity or question in the class. If
the class bring new insights on the same this could be forwards but he need
to take care of time. Your questions were wonderful. They can be made
effective if we change our questioning strategies.
Post-Observation Meeting: After the session, I met and shared the ideas I
had noted during the session. We discussed the importance of using APPLE
technique and letting students talk in pairs. We also discuss why it is
important to track the time while executing the lesson. My colleague
appreciated the feedback. He said he would change his questioning
strategies in next class.
