plane
and solid/space figure in mathematical problems and real-life situations
Learning Competency: The learner is able to calculate speed, distance and time

References: 21st Century Mathlets TM – pp. 100-102; TX – pp. 253-259; DLP Gr. 6 Module 50, 51, 52
Materials: real objects, charts, activity sheets, toy car, ruler/tape measure, stop watch
Value: healthy habit through walking

III. Learning Experiences:

A. Preparatory Activities
1. Drill:
Find the value of x in the following equation

a) x – 10 = 7 b) 3x – 2 = 10 c) 3x + 8 =20
d) 5x = 35 e) x/2 = 12

2. Review:
Find the value of a in the following equation given b = 12; c = 10

a) a = bc b) a = b/c c) 2a = bc/2 d) a/2 = b/c e) a = c2b

3. Motivation:
Ask:
How far is your home from school?
How do you get to school? Do you walk, ride or run?
If you walk, how long, does it take you to school

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
A boy walks at a speed of 5 meter/min. How long does it take him to school if his house is
125 meters away from school?
.
2. Discussion
A. Comprehension checkup:
1. How does the boy go to school?
2. How far is his house from the school?
3. What benefits can we get from walking?

B. Analysis and discussion:

1. What is asked in the problem?
2. What are given?
3. How will you solve the problem?
4. What equation will be formed?
5. From the given speed 5 meters/minute, how many units are involved?
6. Meter is unit of what element? How about minute?
7. What are the things to be considered in calculating speed?

 Present the techan’s triangle for speed.
 Speed – is the distance traveled per unit of time.

 Guide the pupils to solve the problem

Given:
S = 5 m/min D = 125 m T=n

Formula:

Substitution:
T= 125 m
5 m/min

T = 25 min

3. Developing Mastery
Activity #1
Group the pupils into 3 groups.

Group # 1
Materials:
Ruler or meter stick/tape measure
Toy car
Stop watch

What to do:
1. Draw a starting line on the floor.
2. Set the toy car on the starting line and then push it gently.
2. Get the time travelled (in seconds) until it stops.
3. On the stop, measure the distance (in centimeter) travelled.
3. Record the data on the table.
4. Repeat the process and calculate the speed.
5. Report your output in the class.

Activity# 2
Let the same group perform activity number 2 and have one member of the group
present their output.

Group #1
Calculate the distance.

If you shout into the Grand Canyon, your voice travels at the speed of
sound (340 m/s) to the bottom of the canyon and back, and you hear an
echo. How deep is the Grand Canyon at a spot where you can hear your
echo 5.2 seconds after you shout?

Group # 2
Calculate the time.

You need to get to class, 240 meters away, and you can only walk in
the hallways at about 2 m/s. How much time will it take to get to your
class?

Group # 3
Calculate the speed

A plane travels 378,000 meters in 9,000 seconds. What was its speed?

4. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

Solve the problems.

1. A taxi hurries with a constant speed of 84 km/h. How far can it travel in 5 hours?
2. A bus travels with a constant speed of 48 km/h. How long will it take to travel 60 km?
3. Mike drives his car 240 km in 180 minutes. What is his speed in km/hr?
4. If a car travels 400m in 20 seconds how fast is it going?
5. If you move 50 meters in 10 seconds, what is your speed?

5. Generalization
How do we calculate the speed? Distance? Time?
What are the things to be considered in calculating speed?

IV. Assessment
Calculate the speed, distance or time for the following problems.

1. How much time will it take for a bug to travel 5 meters across the floor if it is traveling at 1
m/s?
2. How far can you get away from your little brother with the squirt gun filled with paint if you
can
travel at 3 m/s and you have 15 seconds before he sees you?
3. You arrive in my class 45 seconds after leaving science which is 90 meters away. How fast
did
you travel?
4. How far can your little brother get if he can travel at 2.5 m/s and in 5 seconds you will
discover
that his squirt gun has run out of paint?
5. In a competition, an athlete threw a flying disk 143 meters through the air. While in flight, the
disk traveled at an average speed of 13 m/s. How long did the disk remain in the air?

V. Home Activity

A. Remediation
Solve the following problems.
