Assignment - I

1. Two large plane surfaces are 2.4 cm apart. The space between the surfaces is filled
with glycerine. What force is required to drag a very thin plate of surface area 0.5
square metre between the two large plane at a speed of 0.6 m/s, if (a) the thin plate is in
the middle of the two plane surfaces, (b) the thin plate is at a distance of 0.8 cm from CO1
one of the plane surfaces? Take the dynamic viscosity of glycerine = 8.10 x 10 -1 Ns /
m2.

2. Consider a 4-m-long, 4-m-wide, and 1.5-m-high aboveground swimming pool that is CO2
filled with water to the rim. (a) Determine the hydrostatic force on each wall and the
distance of the line of action of this force from the ground. (b) If the height of the walls
of the pool is doubled and the pool is filled, will the hydrostatic force on each wall
double or quadruple? Why?

3. Derive the conservation of mass equation in cylindrical and spherical form.

4. Air enters a normal shock at 26 kPa, 230 K, and 815 m/s. Calculate the stagnation pressure
and Mach number upstream of the shock, as well as pressure, temperature, velocity, Mach
number, and stagnation pressure downstream of the shock.
