How to Use the Lesson Preparation Pages
The Lesson Preparation Pages (LPPs) are designed to give teachers a place to document
their personal lesson preparation notes, additional teaching support ideas, and help with
VPC movement between lessons. The information supplements the existing lesson plans
and should only be used if additional time is left after completing the lesson plans.
There is one Lesson Preparation Page for each lesson that allows teachers to add their own
personal notes. These pages can be saved and/or printed but need to be downloaded
before they can be edited, saved, or printed.

Concept Development Games

Charades: The teacher shows a card or secretly says a word(s) to a student who then uses
gestures to demonstrate the word(s) for the class to guess what it is.
Directions: The teacher chooses a VPC and shows it to a student. That student will act out
the word(s) on the VPC so that the class can guess what it is. The student acting out cannot
speak at all. It is helpful to set a time limit for guessing the VPC. Keep a good pace by only
doing 2-3 rounds of about 20-30 seconds each.
Examples of the types of VPCs to use: jump, on/off, above/below

Follow the Leader: Students line up behind the teacher or student chosen to be the leader.
The line then follows everything the leader does and everywhere the leader goes.
Directions: Choose someone to be the leader. Have the class line up behind the leader.
Explain the game. The leader then moves around the classroom announcing different
actions or motions to follow. Everyone in line follows the leader until the teacher says,
“Stop!” As time allows, only do 1-2 rounds of the game.
Examples of the types of Leader actions: March around the chair while raising your right
hand, now pat your arms while walking fast to the corner. Then, climb like a monkey over
the line.

Hot Potato: An object (Hot Potato) is given to the students to pass around quickly while
music is played. When the music stops, the student holding the “Hot Potato” must do or say
something that the teacher has instructed.
Directions: Line students up or have them sit in a circle so the students can pass the “Hot
Potato” to each other. Explain the game. The teacher tells the students what happens
when a person is caught with the object. Then, the teacher turns on music and randomly
pauses it to catch a student holding the Hot Potato. The student holding the object must
perform whatever the teacher told the class they would have to do. The game continues
with the Hot Potato being passed around again. As time allows, only do 2-3 rounds of the
game.
Examples of what a student caught with the Hot Potato does: 1) The student stands up and
says the sound of the phonogram “b” when the teacher shows it. 2) The student reads a
word listed on the whiteboard or VPC shown.

Telephone: The teacher quietly tells the first student a word or phrase. Then, that student
has to say the same word or phrase to the next student. This continues until the last student
tells the teacher the word or phrase. The objective is to have the last student say the exact
word or phrase that the teacher told the first student.
Directions: Line students up or have them sit in a circle. Explain the game. The teacher tells
the first student in line a word or phrase. That student turns to the next student and quietly
whispers the exact word or phrase. Then, that student does the same until the last student
turns to the teacher and says the word or phrase for everyone to hear. The teacher tells the
class if it was the same or different from what they told the first student. This game is
designed to be quick. As time allows, only do 1-2 rounds of the game.
Examples of words or phrases to whisper: Hello, How are you?, or banana.

Lesson Preparation or Props Needed lists any
specific preparation needed to support the lesson.
Additional space is provided for the teacher to
add their own preparation or prop ideas.

Transition Modifications are suggested changes

that can be made due to classroom size or set up.
Additional space is provided for the teacher to
add their own transition ideas.

This section will contain one of the four options below:

Concept Development/Enhance Comprehension provides extra
support for concepts that students may struggle to understand,
particularly in early units or early exposures. This section provides
games, activities, and ideas that teachers may use to
demonstrate more difficult concepts and build comprehension.
Language Reminder reminds teachers to use or review some of
the language that may not be specifically scripted in the lesson.
Redirect Questions provides extra support for teachers who may
need assistance in redirecting students when the class cannot
answer a question or if they cannot answer it correctly.
Writer Modifications gives teachers specific suggestions for how
they can modify Writer instruction to efficiently use their time and
aid student engagement.

Other Notes is a space provided for teachers to write their own

personal notes about the lesson plan.

The Reflection Question provides questions for teachers to

reflect on a specific aspect of their teaching or student
interaction after the lesson is finished.

To help teachers know which VPCs to Move After Lesson in preparation for the next lesson. The
VPC’s being moved are organized alphabetically by component to Move From the identified
component and Move To the new component. Teachers can easily remove cards from the current
components and put them with the next lesson components.

For Animals Play, students may or may not respond to the planned question. If the
questions are too challenging, you can confirm their comprehension by asking other
questions that lead to a yes/no answer. For example, “Does the bird sleep in the tree?”
This can help to see if students understand but need more time before they can use the
language themselves to respond.

Lesson Preparation

Lesson Preparation and Props Needed

Transition Modifications
Hop in place and count 1-5 repeatedly.

Concept Development: Listen to and participate in conversations.

Before class, draw a family on the board or prepare a picture of a family but keep it
hidden. Before or after the component I Love Them All, show students the
drawing/picture and have a short conversation about the family. Ask “Who is this?”
pointing to the different people, and talk about their features (tall, short, big, small, fast,
slow, etc.). You can also ask “Who is tall in this family?” and see if students can respond.

Lesson Preparation

Lesson Preparation and Props Needed

Transition Modifications
Jump in place and count 1-5 repeatedly.

Concept Development: Recall information provided and from experience to answer

questions.
Prepare some obstacles (rock, chair, tall grass, or animals in Unit 1) or pictures of
obstacles on the floor. Model jumping over one of the obstacles and ask students, ”What
did I do?” or “What am I doing?” Help them say, “Mr. Smith jumps over the rock.” Repeat
this process with a student who is behaving well. Let them choose an obstacle and what
to do with it. Ask the class, “What did Wilson do?” Help them answer.

Lesson Preparation

Lesson Preparation and Props Needed

Transition Modifications
Walk in place and count 1-5 repeatedly.

Redirect Questions: Recall information provided and from experience to answer

questions.
The final planned question for Family at the Zoo asks students about their favorite
animals. Students may not understand that they should talk about themselves so prepare
to redirect students. You may want to model your favorite animal saying, “I like bears.”.
Another approach is to ask the entire class and listen for unique responses. Some
students will answer with what the characters in the story like while others respond with
what they like. If you hear something completely different, confirm their responses and
praise them. At times, repeat their responses and ask again, “Mary likes tigers! What
animal do you like?”
