NAME:

Gr 8 Date: Time 1 hr
CAPS 2-3 Algebraic Expressions (Term 2) Expand and simplify
Reference algebraic expressions
Topic 2-3-2/1 Multiply and divide monomial by monomial

1. Got it? [5 mins]

Reminders:
A monomial is an algebraic expression made up of one term.
A term is made up of any number of factors multiplied or divided together.
A quick method of multiplying numbers or variables with the same base
is to add the exponents.
Example: a2 × a4 = (a × a) × (a × a × a × a) = a6
expanded form
To multiply two or more monomials:
Multiply the signs
Multiply the constant factors (numbers)
Multiply factors with the same base.
Try to remember Sign, Number, Variable/Letter
Example: ⎯ 2 x2 × 5 x3 = ⎯ 10 x5
⎯×+=⎯
2 × 5 = 10
x2 × x3 = x5

2. Go ahead! [20 mins]

2.1 Write out each of the following in expanded form (see reminder above), and simplify.
2.1.1 a2 × a3 2.1.2 b2 × b5 2.1.3 4g3 × g4
2.1.4 d6 × d 2.1.5 2y5 × 3y4 2.1.6 xy2 × x2y

4. Got it? [5 mins]

Reminder:
A quick method of dividing numbers or variables with the same base
is to subtract the exponents.

𝑎×𝑎×𝑎×𝑎×𝑎×𝑎×𝑎
Example: a7 ÷ a4 = = a3
𝑎×𝑎×𝑎×𝑎
expanded form
To divide two or more monomials:
Divide the signs
Divide or cancel the constant factors (numbers)
Divide factors with the same base.
Try to remember Sign, Number/Variable, Letter
Example: ⎯ 8 x3 ÷ 4 x2 = ⎯ 2 x
⎯÷+=⎯
8÷4=2
x3 × x2 = x
