To identify like and unlike terms we look at the variables (letters)
For example 2a, 6a and 8a are like terms. 5p2, 3p2 and p2 are like terms.
Look at the variables
Terms which have exactly the same variables are called like terms.
3f and 5 fg are unlike terms. 2p2 and 5p3 are unlike terms.
Look at the variables
Terms which have variables that are different are called unlike terms. Algebraic terms are normally written with the variables in alphabetical order. This means that 4fp and 5pf are really like terms as 5pf should be written as 5fp. It is very important to remember that in algebra we can only add and subtract like terms, not unlike terms.
