Level Outcome:

At the end of this course, the 2nd year NCM 104 Community Health Nursing 1 Skills Laboratory students will be
able to perform safe basic skills in dealing with normal mother and newborn, child, family, communities and
population groups in any health care setting with appropriate and holistic care utilizing the nursing process

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, the 2 nd year NCM 104 Community Health Nursing 1 Skills Laboratory students will be
able to:

1. Enhance their knowledge and skills about Waist to Hip Ratio


2. Perform the procedure accurately
3. Analyze and interpret the gathered data correctly and completely
4. Document the data gathered accurately

Objectives:

During the performance of activity using the Waist to Hip Ratio, the students will be able to:
1. Understand the importance of Waist to Hip Ratio
2. Use the appropriate method/technique in measuring the Waist to Hip Ratio in community health nursing
3. Educate the community about Waist to Hip Ratio

General Instructions:

1. Attend the scheduled skills laboratory class wearing a prescribed school uniform
2. Review the skill(s) to be practiced and demonstrated
3. Secure a copy of the checklist provided for skills demonstration
4. Gather the equipment needed for skill performance
5. Students will follow safety measures at all times
6. No food or drink is allowed during the online clinical skill class
7. Secure a convenient place where you can perform the procedure to avoid distractions

PROCEDURE SCORE REMARKS


1. Prepare the necessary materials and equipment:
 Tape Measure
 Calculator
2. Introduce self and verify the client's identity using agency protocol.
- Explain to the client what you are going to do, why it is necessary, and
how he or she can cooperate.
3. Perform hand hygiene
4. Waist Circumference:
The patient should be standing and clothing should be removed from around
waist and hips.
5. Instruct the patient to stand with feet pointing forwards and approximately 25-
30cm apart. Their weight should be evenly distributed.
6. Feel for the lower rib margin and make a mark with a water-soluble marker pen
7. Palpate the iliac crest in the mid-axillary line and mark on the skin surface.
8. Repeat this process on the opposite side of the body (this improves the
reproducibility of the measurement).
9. Instruct the patient to breath out gently whilst the measurement is taken.
10. Apply the tape horizontally around the subject’s body, line the tape over the two
marks and ensure it is sitting evenly.
11. Record the measurement in centimeters
12. Hip Circumference:
Following on from the waist measurement, ensure the participant remains in the
same position, and breathing out gently.
13. With the tape measure the point yielding the maximum circumference. As
before the tape should sit horizontally around the body, without a tilt.
14. Record the measurement in centimeters
15. Instruct the patient to re-adjust clothing.
16. Perform hand hygiene
17 Divide. Use a calculator to divide your waist size by your hip size
18. Compute for the Waist-Hip Ratio
