LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
Mathematics 10 (Q1 – Lesson 2a)
Illustrates an Arithmetic Sequence

I. Introduction
“Ipon Challenge” became popular these days because of its advantages
specially in times of financial crisis. In this type of saving, the saver followed
a certain rule of saving his money in a piggy bank. Most of the time, the rule
is by increasing a certain amount of saving money within a period of time. It
takes guts, discipline, and determination to do the challenge but at the end
the reward is fruitful.

This is just one of application of arithmetic sequence. In this lesson,

you will learn the importance of arithmetic sequence. A more detailed
explanation and examples were given for you to understand this type of
sequence.

II. Learning Competency

MELC: Illustrates an Arithmetic Sequence (M10AL-Ib-1)

III. Objectives:
At the end of this Learning Activity Sheet, you are expected to:
1. Define arithmetic sequence.
2. Determine if the given sequence is an arithmetic sequence or not.
3. Determine the common difference of a given arithmetic sequence.
4. Write the next term/terms of the given arithmetic sequence.

IV. Discussion
An arithmetic sequence or arithmetic progression is a sequence where each
new term after the first is obtained by adding a constant d, called the common
difference. The nth term of arithmetic sequence is

1
an = a1 + (n − 1) d
where an = nth term
a1 = first term
n = number of terms
d = common difference
= a2 - a1 (second term – first term), or
= a3 - a2 (third term – second term), or
= a4 - a3 (fourth term – third term), or
= a4 - a3 (fourth term – third term), or
= an - an-1

Example 1. The following sequences illustrates arithmetic sequence and

their pattern
Arithmetic sequence Pattern
4, 7, 10, 13, … Adding 3 to get the next term
12, 5, -2, -9, …. Adding -7 to get the next term
-24, -20, -16, -12, … Adding 4 to get the next term
5, 5 ½, 6, 6 ½, … Adding ½ to get the next term
10, 9 ¼, 8 ½, 7 ¾, … Adding – ¾ to get the next term

Example 2. Determine the common difference of the given sequences.

a) 4, 7, 10, 13, … Given: a1 = 4, a2 = 7
Solution: d = a2 - a 1
d = 7-4
d=3
b) 42, 35, 28, 21, … Given: a1 = 42, a2= 35
Solution: d = a2 - a 1
d = 35-42
d = -7
Example 3. Write the first three terms of the arithmetic sequence defined by
an = 3n + 5
Solution: To write the next three terms of the sequence, substitute the
value of n in an = 3n + 5 by 1, 2 and 3 respectively.
If n =1 If n =2 If n =3
an = 3n + 5 an = 3n + 5 an = 3n + 5
a1 = 3(1) + 5 a2 = 3(2) + 5 a3 = 3(3) + 5
a1 = 3 + 5 a2 = 6 + 5 a3 = 9 + 5
a1 = 8 a2 = 11 a3 = 14
Thus, the first three terms of the sequence are 8, 11 and 14.

Example 3. Determine if the sequence 5, 12, 19, 26, … is an arithmetic

sequence or not. If it is arithmetic sequence, find the common
difference and the next three terms.
2
Solution: Given: a1 = 5, a2 = 12, a3 = 19, a4 = 26
To determine if the sequence is arithmetic or not, there must be a
common difference between any two terms in the sequence.
Thus, solving for d … d = a2 - a1 = 12 - 5 = 7 or
= a3 - a2 = 19 - 12 = 7 or
= a4 - a3 = 26 – 19 = 7

Hence sequence 5, 12, 19, 26, …is an arithmetic sequence because

it has a common difference (d) of 7. The next three terms are:
a5 = a4 + d = 26 + 7 = 33
a6 = a5 + d = 33 + 7 = 40
a7 = a6 + d = 40 + 7 = 47
Thus, the next three terms of the sequence are 33, 40 and 47.
