‭Chapter 3: Coordinate Geometry‬

‭1. Cartesian System‬

‭●‬ C ‭ artesian Plane:‬‭A plane defined by two perpendicular‬‭lines, known as axes,‬

‭intersecting at a common point called the origin (0,0)‬
‭●‬ ‭X-Axis:‬‭The horizontal axis.‬
‭○‬ ‭Y-Axis:‬‭The vertical axis.‬
‭●‬ ‭Coordinates:‬‭The position of any point on the plane‬‭is described by an ordered pair‬
‭(x,y) where x is the distance from the y-axis (abscissa) and y is the distance from the‬
‭x-axis (ordinate).‬
‭●‬ ‭Abscissa:‬‭The x-coordinate of a point, which is the‬‭distance from the y-axis.‬
‭●‬ ‭Ordinate:‬‭The y-coordinate of a point, which is the‬‭distance from the x-axis.‬
‭●‬ ‭Origin:‬‭The point where the x-axis and y-axis intersect,‬‭denoted as (0,0).‬

‭2. Plotting Points‬

‭●‬ ‭Steps to Plot a Point (x,y):‬

‭○‬ ‭Identify the x-coordinate:‬‭Move right from the origin‬‭if xxx is positive, or‬
‭move left if x is negative.‬
‭○‬ ‭Identify the y-coordinate:‬‭Move up from the x-axis‬‭if yyy is positive, or move‬
‭down if y is negative.‬
‭○‬ ‭Mark the Point:‬‭The point where the x and y positions‬‭meet on the plane is‬
‭the location of (x,y)‬

‭3. Quadrants‬

‭●‬ ‭The Cartesian plane is divided into four quadrants by the x-axis and y-axis:‬
‭○‬ ‭Quadrant I:‬‭(+,+) - Both x and y are positive.‬
‭○‬ ‭Quadrant II:‬‭(−,+) - x is negative and y is positive.‬
‭○‬ ‭Quadrant III:‬‭(−,−) - Both x and y are negative.‬
‭○‬ ‭Quadrant IV:‬‭(+,−) - x is positive and y is negative.‬

‭4. Intercepts‬

‭●‬ X ‭ -Intercept:‬‭The x-intercept of a line is the point‬‭where the line crosses the x-axis. At‬
‭this point, the value of y is 0.‬
‭●‬ ‭Y-Intercept:‬‭The y-intercept of a line is the point‬‭where the line crosses the y-axis. At‬
‭this point, the value of x is 0.‬

‭5. Points on Axes‬

‭●‬ P ‭ oint on X-Axis:‬‭If y=0, then the point lies on the‬‭x-axis. For example, (a,0) where a‬
‭is a real number.‬
‭●‬ ‭Point on Y-Axis:‬‭If x=0, then the point lies on the‬‭y-axis. For example, (0,b) where b‬
‭is a real number.‬
