3. Quadrants
● The Cartesian plane is divided into four quadrants by the x-axis and y-axis:
○ Quadrant I:(+,+) - Both x and y are positive.
○ Quadrant II:(−,+) - x is negative and y is positive.
○ Quadrant III:(−,−) - Both x and y are negative.
○ Quadrant IV:(+,−) - x is positive and y is negative.
4. Intercepts
● X -Intercept:The x-intercept of a line is the pointwhere the line crosses the x-axis. At
this point, the value of y is 0.
● Y-Intercept:The y-intercept of a line is the pointwhere the line crosses the y-axis. At
this point, the value of x is 0.
● P oint on X-Axis:If y=0, then the point lies on thex-axis. For example, (a,0) where a
is a real number.
● Point on Y-Axis:If x=0, then the point lies on they-axis. For example, (0,b) where b
is a real number.
